New Ahrefs and Metricus data confirms that AI-referred traffic isn't just growing, it converts dramatically better than traditional search. ChatGPT visitors convert at 4.4x the rate of organic Google traffic, and AI search traffic overall converts at 14.2% versus Google's 2.8%. Shopify saw AI-referred traffic grow 7x between January 2025 and early 2026, with AI-attributed orders up 11x.

The signal: AI search delivers fewer but much higher-intent buyers. People who already did their research and are arriving with a decision in hand.

MediaPost reported that Google Gemini has overtaken Perplexity to become the world's second-largest source of AI chatbot referrals to websites. March 2026 data shows Gemini at 8.65% of AI referrals, with Perplexity dropping to 7.07%. ChatGPT remains dominant at roughly 87% of all AI referral traffic.

The shake-up matters because it confirms Gemini is finally translating its Google Workspace and Android distribution into actual website-driving search behavior, and that the AI search visibility map is volatile, not settled.
