Next stop on the Blackstone Watershed Collab Source-to-Sea scouting tour: the backup location.

Small plot twist: it’s also a state park. 😅

Take only photos, leave only footsteps…and always have a backup for your backup.

Once work begins, "existing conditions" become "conditions we really wish someone had photographed."

Take a wide shot. Capture a few details. Record where you were standing so the angle can be repeated later. You may not know which part will become important, but future-you will be relieved that present-you understood the basic passage of time.

I'm constantly in awe of how beautiful New England is and still can't believe that part of my job gets me out to hike these amazing spots and explore more of my amazing home.

Perfect view. Open airspace. One catch: I can’t operate the drone from this state park without permission.

I’ve got a few weeks to see if the permit comes through. Sometimes finding the shot is the easy part.

New England is full of places like this, which might be why they’re so easy to overlook.

I recorded this while hiking to an overlook I was scouting for the Blackstone Watershed Collaborative’s Source-to-Sea Paddle. The trail wasn’t my destination, but I kept noticing the roots, rocks, understory, and variety of trees along the way.

Living in Southern California for ten years changed the way I see woods like these. What feels ordinary here isn’t ordinary everywhere.

That’s part of what I want 124’s work to do: help people notice the places around them, understand why they matter, and give the organizations protecting them better ways to tell those stories.

Scouting stop number two.

The goal was to find a safe place to fly, confirm the view of the river, and see whether I could capture the paddlers coming and going during the Source-to-Sea Paddle.

The reality was standing alone in the woods, wondering how this counts as a workday.

I’m not complaining.

A quiet moment in the middle of a full day scouting the Blackstone River.

In a few weeks, we’ll be documenting the Blackstone Watershed Collaborative’s Source to Sea Paddle as it makes its way from Massachusetts into Rhode Island.

Covering a moving event like this takes more than showing up with a camera. We need to know where we can safely fly, where the river is visible from land, how long it takes to get between stops, and whether we can get downstream before the paddlers do.

This is one quiet clip from one of several scouting days. Plenty more to come.

Always fun to see your work out in the wild!

Blackstone Watershed Collaborative shared our Home Brew Dam removal imagery during this week’s public meeting for the proposed Hayward Landing Dam removal in Douglas.

We’ve been documenting Home Brew over time using repeat aerial imaging and simple callouts to help people see what’s changing and better understand the work taking place.

Seeing it used as an example for another community is a pretty good reminder that strong project documentation can keep being useful long after it’s captured.
