Day 17 of 20.

I’m not sure what kind of fungus this is, but I love what it’s doing here.

An old tree fell, and now it’s becoming part of the next stage of life in the forest. Fungi, insects, moss, soil, shelter, nutrients, all of it is part of the cycle. It’s always worth capturing those moments where you can actually see the forest recycling itself in real time.

The rain helped this shot a lot, too. Wet bark gets darker, which makes the orange fungus stand out even more. Getting close and shooting up the log adds impact and gives you an angle most people don’t stop long enough to experience.

Pro tip: After rain, look for natural contrast. Wet bark, leaves, and stone often get darker, which can make brighter colors pop without needing to over-edit the image.

Forests are never just trees. They are whole ecosystems made up of water, stone, wildlife, texture, and all the little pockets of life that make a place feel alive.

Sometimes you’re lucky enough to stumble on a spot with so much texture and detail that you just have to stop and take the shot.

Sometimes the whole shot comes down to noticing one tiny thing.

The shallow depth of field is doing a lot here. You can create blur like this in post, but this one was done in camera by getting close with a 35mm prime lens at f/2.8. After that, it was just some lighting adjustments and a crop.

Pro tip: When you’re shooting something small, get low and let the background blur do some of the work. A simple change in angle can make a tiny subject feel much bigger and more dramatic.
