Challenge completed ✔️ Not quite 28 miles because of snow on the trail, but almost 19 miles. In the end, it’s not about the miles; it is about this wonderful community coming together, raising money for the kids, and sparking change and inspiration. My heart is full, my feet are sore, and I am proud of every mile hiked and every dollar raised. Thank you to all who supported me and the Wish kids. My hike is over, but it is not too late to donate. I've been to Tijuana many times before, but never with a bunch of designers from this side of the border, visiting Baja designers on their turf. The first ever delivered and showcased its thriving design community and talent. We started with lunch at .popularmexicano, and visited the showroom of .mx Estudio, an eclectic collective of artists and makers (architect ). Some shopping next door at and then we headed downtown to the historic Cesar's Hotel for cocktails and, of course, a table-side Cesar salad (the birthplace of the Cesar Salad). Last week I attended the inspiring AIGA San Diego Y Design Conference with a fantastic lineup of speakers exploring design, creativity, and its impact. Adam G blew me away with his iconic style, Theresa Fitzgerald charmed us with some insights into Sesame Street design, and our very own Máximo Escobedo told his story and shared the process on the World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 branding. Eric Alba humbly shared his non-linear journey and incredible work, Stephanie Lorig held us accountable by writing a postcard to our future selves (that will actually come to my mailbox in a few months), Jennifer Sterling gave us a glimpse into her animation process, and Dave Conover was the best moderator to conclude the "Y" era.

Yes, sadly, this was the last Y Conference. I've attended for the previous 16 years and have always been involved in some capacity, either volunteering, planning, or designing it. But don't you worry! Bigger things are coming next year with the celebration of World Design Capital.

AND, it is always great to see my design community, (re)connect with friends, and hang out with my conference buddy Pam. Congratulations Amy Levine and the AIGA San Diego Tijuana team for putting on such a great design- and impact-infused day!

With a solid brand foundation and a clear vision for the brand, it was finally time to create the logo and supporting brand elements. To capture its high-end yet approachable and caring quality, we started with moodboards to narrow the look and feel. Next, we moved on to sketches, loose logo comps, and iterations refining the logo.

Finally, we created the Nautilus Shell logo that embodies the brand’s foundation and is jam-packed with meaning and symbology. The shell stands for shelter and protection (home construction), adaptive growth (remodeling), and beach and ocean (La Jolla). The underlying geometry of the shell follows the Fibonacci sequence, which is considered a divine proportion and precision (craftsmanship). Our Nautilus Construction shell also incorporates rays of light (leadership and inspiring joy and warmth) and the illusion of a staircase rising upward (Improvement).

Clarity first.

Clarity is the core of our beliefs and how we approach every project through our “Clearly Branded” process. With a solid name and a clear vision for the logo, Nautilus Construction founder Jahlel was eager to jump in and move forward with building the brand. But before we started to think about logos and colors, we entered an intensive discovery phase. Here we created alignment and meaning around the Nautilus brand, answered many important questions, and took a good look at current turbulent times. All findings and outcomes were captured in our signature “Brand Clarity Report.”

Time for another Case Study:

In a nutshell, I mean seashell, branding that conveys San Diego coastal vibes, pride in their craft and services, and genuine engagement with their clients.
This Construction company started at a challenging yet exciting time mid-pandemic and knew it wanted to be more than a general contracting company. Nautilus Construction aspired to set the standard for the home remodeling experience and exceed its client’s expectations. The founder’s big desire was to truly help people. Help them improve their home and life and navigate this foreign home remodeling undertaking with genuine care and full transparency. Therefore, it was important to apply the founder’s nurturing personality traits also to the brand personality.

As a strategic design studio, we started asking lots of questions. We dug deep to learn not only about their brand personality and what makes them unique but also other aspects of brand building: the big Why, mission, vision and positioning, main goals for the future, core values, ideal customer, and their competition.

And just like that, 2.5 years later, we are back at the “Y” Design Conference. We had a fantastic first day with thought-provoking and inspiring speakers, old and new friends, and many hugs. I am so happy how all the branding and graphics turned out. It’s always so satisfying seeing the fruit of our labor all come together (smoothly). Another full day to come tomorrow….

It feels good to be back. Back to AIGA events, back to exchange and interact with the local design community, and back on the San Diego chapter board. This time as Communications Director, challenging myself to lead a team and help to take the AIGA San Diego brand to the next level.

Last Thursday we had our new speaker series, which highlights fearless design leaders. First up: super talented, award-winning artist and illustrator Rafael López. His art is amazing, he has a cool story, and is such a great person. Absolutely enjoyed it.
