First IMSA weekend in the books. 🏁

Porsche Carrera Cup + Lamborghini Super Trofeo Race 2 - a pretty perfect way to close it out.

I came in already a Porsche fan. 💖
I’m leaving a new Lamborghini fan, too. 🇮🇹

There’s nothing quite like experiencing these cars trackside — the design, the sound, the speed, and the energy of it all.

Definitely not my last IMSA weekend.

Some subjects have a way of finding you.💖✨

Of all the extraordinary machines I encountered at Artomobilia, this may be the one I’ll remember most.

A propeller-driven automobile from the Lane Motor Museum collection — wonderfully unconventional, beautifully strange, and impossible for an artist not to study from every angle.

Then Jeff Lane invited me in and started it for me.

Standing beside a machine tells you one thing. Sitting inside it while it comes to life tells you something entirely different.

The sound. The vibration. The scale of that wooden propeller. The engineering. And perhaps most of all, the audacity of imagining something like this in the first place.

Those are the experiences that stay with me — and sometimes, eventually, find their way onto canvas.

I have a feeling this one and I aren’t quite finished with each other yet. 🎨

What I notice.

Line. Material. Reflection. Patina. Typography. Engineering.

The curve of a fender. The typography of a badge. Wear on a steering wheel. Light moving across paint. A flash of color behind a wheel.

Small things that reveal something about the whole.

I’m drawn to details like these because they help me understand the character of the machines I paint — not simply what they look like, but what gives each one its presence.

These observations become part of the visual vocabulary I carry back into the studio.

Sometimes the beginning of a painting isn’t a sketch.

It’s simply noticing.

A study in red.

Form. Reflection. Carbon. Chrome. Engineering.

And that unmistakable yellow shield.

I’ve been paying particularly close attention to Ferrari lately — for reasons that may already be appearing on my easel.

Seeing a car in person changes the way I understand it. A photograph can give me information, but being beside the machine gives me something else entirely: scale, presence, changing light, unexpected reflections — and the subtle transitions in form that give it character.

Those observations eventually make their way back into the studio and, ultimately, into paint.

Sometimes creating begins simply by looking closer.

Some forms don’t age. They become more themselves with time.

A few details that stopped me in my tracks at the VELOCE Hangar Party — an evening surrounded by extraordinary automobiles, aircraft, design and conversation.

There’s something entirely different about experiencing automotive design in person. The scale. The reflections moving across a curved surface. The relationship between materials. The way a line changes as you move around the car.

Those are the things I take with me when I return to the studio.

For me, automotive art begins long before paint touches canvas.

It begins here — looking closely.

More from this evening to come.
