We heartily congratulate Saikhom Mirabai Chanu who not only brought home the first olympic medal for India in the olympic games this year, but also won the hearts of many indians who erupted in a shower of love, support and appreciation for the silver medalist, some labeling her "the daughter of India".
The reality though, is that the daughters of north east india are harassed, abused(both verbally and physically),called racial slurs and constantly subjected to racial discrimination. North East indians are RARELY represented in media, television or films aside from small, stereotypical side characters. Is it because they did not do a ground breaking patriotic feat for the rest of the country to very conveniently label them "a matter of pride for the country" ?

North East Indians are not your pawns to claim only when it benefits you or your pride.

This post serves as a reminder to include north east indians in your conversations surrounding india/indians and treat them as one of your own even when they are not world champions or olympic medalists.

“Many feel that woman have poor navigation skills and cannot judge the distances as well as men. Are all these allegations about woman drivers are true? Studies conducted by scientists in Germany show that Testosterone, a male hormone is responsible for spatial ability in a person. This spatial ability gives you the skills to assess spaces and judge distances which are essential for driving. Since the testosterone will be less in a woman, some of these may be true”, says an article by tutorialspoint.

Often this is used as a research paper to substantiate the conjecture that women are bad drivers by innumerable people. However, how much of it is true?

Find out in our blog page.

"If it's not intersectional, it's not feminism"
In this emerging era of wokeness and the youth wanting to be more politically and morally correct, feminism has been a very convenient movement for privileged people to hop on, without realising the need for it to be more inclusive to more marginalized communities.
"Intersectionality" is a term coined by Dr. KimberlĂŠ Crenshaw who describes intersectionality as "A prism for seeing the way in which various forms of inequality often operate together and exacerbate each other."

The Seed of Gender Disparity

‘’Well, his Maths teacher is a woman, you know? No wonder they didn‘t ace the quiz this year.’‘

‘’Did you hear? They hired a woman to teach the children cricket. Was she the only candidate or what?‘’

“Ha! They would be lucky if they don‘t resemble bleached whales by the end of the year, let alone win the championship.’‘

‘’Oh my god, did you hear? Her husband was at the cart today; buying vegetables. God knows what else she must make the poor fellow do at home.“

‘’Oh, when is she home anyways? Day and night, at her office. Now, we all know what she must be doing there, don‘t we?’‘

‘’Her son started crying at the football practice today. Imagine, started crying! Don‘t they teach the boy anything?’‘

‘’You should have seen the sight. Crying for his mummy, like a girl!‘’

‘’Jeez, what is he wearing? A pink shirt! Somebody should go and tell his parents that they have a son, not a daughter.‘’

Common, isn‘t it? For that kid holding on to his elder’s hand and staring up to that aunty at the tailor‘s shop, or that uncle at a house party, or his father, as he complains to his colleagues, or his mother, as she swears at what-the-world-is-coming-to-these-days, on phone with her friends.

For that kid, holding on to his elder‘s hand, and soaking up their words, quietly understanding that men aren’t supposed to wear pink shirts when outside, or cry when they get hurt, or step out to buy groceries. Women shouldn‘t spend hours working at the office, or try to teach Maths or Cricket; it would be their fault only if the trophy doesn’t come home.

Whenever we suggest that a person was not or will not be able to do a job, just because they were born as a man or as a woman, we create an environment where gender stereotyping becomes a living, breathing existence. The same environment, where our children shall grow to become a part of the never-ending oppressive cycle of gender disparity.

Internalised Misogyny

“Misogyny (/mɪˈsɒdʒɪni/) is hatred or contempt for women or girls. It is a way of keeping women at a lower status than men. In other words, misogyny maintains and enforces sexism” ~Wikipedia

“Girls are not as good as boys when it comes to science”

“You should get a male physics teacher. The female ones aren’t worthy”

“What are you wearing oh my god?! I can see your stomach. You have no sense or what?”

“Stop staring at the mobile! No man wants to marry a blind girl!”

“Wear Shorts? You want to be a failure like other girls?”

“You won’t be able to do it. It’s a man’s job”

“Ew please shave your arms if you are wearing sleeveless”

Being a woman, I have had to face countless judgements like these in my real life. However, were you visualising rude sexist men in your head as you read through these phrases? If yes, then you’re wrong. It were women who passed these misogynistic statements to me over the course of my life.

I am certain numerous women have had similar experiences where they were subjected to misogyny and sexism by other fellow women. This is known as Internalised Misogyny : Misogyny emanating from within the women community (i.e. internal) and not from men. If you dig deep into your brain, you will realise that you too might have partaken in this, at least once in your life. Statements like “I am not like other girls”, “She wears so much makeup”, “I eat a lot, unlike other girls who don’t eat at all”, “You should have waxed, it looks hideous”, “I like to befriend boys because girls are so melodramatic”, “I believe in humanism, not feminism” and so on are commonly used by young women to bring down other women so as to elevate their individual stature.
But Why?

Toxic Masculinity- what an offensive term, ain’t it? These feminists I swear! All they want is to tear down men!

Wait wait wait…Hold your horses and hear me out, alright?

Have you ever heard these phrases?

“Abe ladki ki tarah kya bhaag raha hai be!”

“Strong boys don’t cry”

“Mard ko dard nahi hota”

“Abe Pink kyu pahana hai, ladki hai kya?”

If you have heard them and you still find nothing wrong with it, I want you to read them again. And again. Until you figure out what exactly is out of place.

These phrases are a manifestation of our society’s rigorous and extreme gender roles. Preventing boys from freely expressing themselves and chaining them to the shackles of sexism just to make them fit into the ‘masculine’ category is how we define Toxic Masculinity. Masculinity isn’t toxic in itself. It is one of the most wonderful and beautiful expressions out there. It is only when gender roles are enforced in the name of Masculinity that it becomes toxic and claustrophobic.

While in today’s day and age, at least in high societies, girls applying for leadership positions, wearing a pantsuit or having their hair cut short are acceptable activities but men opting for nurturing vocations like teaching and nursing, donning a beautiful ball gown or having long hair is demeaning, shameful, appalling and intolerable, to say the least. Men who try to break free from these invisible chains are constantly pushed back into the box until they themselves become regressive members of society who push forward the cycle of suppression.

Some common toxic masculinity traits perpetuated by the society include men trying to work things out on their own and not seeking help. Be honest, do you feel that asking your girlfriend or wife for financial assistance is embarrassing and shameful and that it should be your job to provide for her and not the other way around? Guess what, you are a victim. Everyone needs help sometimes. Exhibiting your vulnerability and asking for help will not make you any less of a man.

10/07/2021

they’ll tell you
you’re fat
that you need to lose weight in order to fit in
that the weight of your own existence
is defined by the stretch marks
that steadily go across your arms.

they’ll tell you
your brows are bushy
that the tapestry of hair which joins the two ends,
the unibrow
is a manly gesture.

they’ll tell you
your dark circles look awful
that they resemble the eyes of a raccoon
that they are incapable of transmitting the light within.

they’ll make you believe that the sole purpose of your existence
is to thrive between the materialism of the world
that your eyes, your brows, your arms, your legs
define your nebula.

so you’ll run and you’ll push
and apply the defective cosmetics being sold
on amazon at $5.99
until you outrun yourself.

and then the world will applaud
the rain will feel hard-
the somber sunshine will dawn upon you.

so then you’ll blame it on constellations,
on the alignment of stars
that a particular moment
of a particular day
was doomed
which brought you to this
claustrophobic fate
you now call life.

and it’d be too late to realize-
you would’ve already lost yourself by then.

and then they’ll tell you to be fearless
to battle it out with the world
which subconsciously envies you
they’ll tell you to stand up for yourself
to scream, to shout
right into the void

until you’re heard
until you’re hurt.

so you’ll learn to be brave
stand up on your own feet
you’ll admire the twinkling stars
so bright, so blazing
as if they’ve got nothing to lose.

but you, my dear-
too, are set ablaze
you too, have nothing to lose,

because no one can ever do
worse
than what has already happened to you.
