One of the few beach/shore breaks in Maldives - This is the biggest excitement for 80s kids growing up in Thuraakunu.
It's a phenomenon experienced at the beggining of northeast monsoon. From December - January in between, creating a fun condition for water sports like surfing, , .
Northeast Monsoon in Maldives is from December 10th-7th April this period is the dry season in Maldives but random thunderstorms, rain and strong winds are experienced at the beggining and becomes calm and completely dry till the end of April.
The face of the island completely changes during this period. These waves carries all the sand from one cheek of the island and gently placing them on the the other. And moves back to the other side during southwest monsoon, like a moving beach.
Thuraakunu is one the most exposed island to the open ocean in the north, so to the waves created by the storms during active periods of the both monsoons because of the island's unique geographical location.
