Iranian state-linked sources and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Wednesday that Iranian air defenses shot down a US F/A-18 fighter jet near the southern port city of Jask, with the aircraft reportedly crashing into the Indian Ocean. The IRGC released unverified footage purporting to show the strike.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) firmly rejected the claim, stating “This information is false” and confirming that no U.S. fighter aircraft have been shot down by Iran during Operation Epic Fury.
The latest assertion adds to a series of unverified Iranian claims of downing US aircraft, including earlier reports of an F-15 near Hormuz Island and an F-35. Most of these have been disputed or denied by the US.
Separately, a US Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker crashed in western Iraq earlier in March, killing all six crew members. The incident was not attributed to hostile fire. There were also reports of three F-15s lost in a friendly-fire incident involving Kuwaiti defenses.
The claims come amid ongoing US strikes on Iran and parallel diplomatic efforts.

Russia launched nearly 1,000 drones against Ukraine within 24 hours in one of its largest aerial barrages of the war, including a rare major daytime attack on Tuesday.
The assault consisted of about 392 drones overnight and over 550 during the day. It killed at least eight people and wounded dozens across several regions.
Strikes damaged a UNESCO World Heritage site in Lviv’s historic centre, hitting an apartment building next to the 17th-century Bernardine monastery and St. Andrew’s Church, causing fires and structural damage. In Ivano-Frankivsk, two people were killed and a maternity hospital was hit. Additional fatalities occurred in Vinnytsia and overnight strikes in Poltava, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Russia’s “absolute depravity,” stating the scale of the attack shows Moscow has “no intention of actually ending this war.” The strikes also damaged power infrastructure, affecting Moldova and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Ukraine reported a high interception rate, but civilian areas were still impacted. Peace talks remain stalled amid the intensified campaign.
