Every time someone says “follow the evidence-based route,” I won't lie, I cringe a little inside because they usually mean something like this, Start Seeing a Developmental pediatrician, Getting a Speech therapist and an Occupational therapist. Going to
Behavior therapy, Maybe a GI doctor if symptoms get severe, And that’s where the conversation often stops.
It frustrates me to the core because the focus becomes managing behaviors and helping the child function inside the diagnosis and for some families those services can help with skills. I’m not dismissing that. Lucian has benefited from speech-style work and play-based learning too.
But what shocked me as a parent was realizing something very important. None of those appointments were asking why my child’s brain was inflamed. No one asked about mold exposure.
No one asked about gut infections. No one asked about heavy metals or environmental toxins.
No one asked about immune dysfunction or mitochondrial stress. Not one soul even mentioned Lyme disease.
Instead, They focused on the label, I started asking a different question. What if autism symptoms are sometimes a signal that the body is under biological stress? So the approach I use with families looks very different.
We look at things like Gut microbiome imbalance
Chronic infections and parasites, Mycotoxins from mold exposure, Nutrient depletion and mineral imbalance, Mitochondrial dysfunction
Immune system dysregulation, Chronic inflammation in the brain.
Instead of asking “how do we manage the symptoms,” the question becomes, What is driving the inflammation? When those layers start getting addressed, many families begin to notice things changing. We see Better eye contact, more language attempts, less aggression or self-injury. We often see better sleep, Improved digestion, and More connection.
No, we don't see overnight miracles, But we do see real shifts. .
The biggest difference between these two approaches is simple.
One model assumes the condition is permanent and focuses on coping. The other model asks whether something biological might be interfering with a child’s ability to thrive. And if it is, maybe the body deserves support. Every parent deserves access to both sides of this conversation.
If you’re a parent trying to understand the biological side of autism, gut health, inflammation, mold exposure, and detox pathways, this is exactly what I help families navigate inside Rooted Remedies.
You’re not alone here, I walk with you...
And there are more questions worth asking.
