As early as the 17th century, It's known that cartographers
and field surveyors liked to back their maps onto fabric while undertaking their field mapping in order to make them more resistant to natural elements and wear and tear. These early maps were often pre-folded, hinged and backed with linen for ease of use when in the field. Although these days the Art of 'Dissect To Fold' Maps is rarely commissioned we are happy to say still make these to order, particularly popular with Large Estate Owners. The Mounting Company is proud to retain it's role as the preferred mounting company of Large maps for Geographers
A - Z. Linen is a textile made from the fibers of the flax plant and has always been popular as an Artwork medium because of its strength, it's resistance to decay and it's alkaline PH value. Linen is frequently used for the archival restoration and mounting of vintage posters, therefore making it perfect for mounting Printed Artwork and is our preferred medium for printed Artwork. If you are in need of a little inspiration we are able to recommend artists and designers and have strong links with both The 'Linen Backed Art Co' and 'Life in Pictures' as we mount the majority of their prints.
