Showing our support for Nova Scotia arts and culture as per the challenge issued by Atlantic Books Today

"Listen. Are we still reeling from the news of the budget cuts? Absolutely. Are we going to let it stop us from talking about the great importance of Atlantic authors and publishers? Absolutely NOT.

The shelves in our office are filled with books from all our incredible publishers, and a great number of them come from right here, beautiful Nova Scotia. The literary scene here is vibrant, diverse, and crucial. This collection here is just a small number of the gorgeous titles that have come out of this province. Government funding and support has been a vital part of these books being made, and with the proposed cuts, we risk losing out on the stories of our land, our neighbours, that deserve to be told. It would be a devastating and significant loss.

So, we are issuing a challenge here. Take a picture of your own collection of Nova Scotian Books and share them with us! Create a post with the books you have at home, tag us, and let's make it clear to all - that Nova Scotia is home to incredible artists, and that they deserve to be supported and amplified.

Defend Nova Scotia. Do not defund."

I’m a few thousand kms away from NS, but I see troubling news from my home province. (And much of the rest of the world.)

I understand that the NS government needs to opt for austerity, but it is alarming that those in charge think that means they should completely defund Nova Scotia’s publishing industry and close many of our historic sites!

Do they not see value in our distinctive culture? And do they not learn from inspiring examples of resilience and creativity that our publishing industry and our historic sites provide?

Apparently not.

Yet it was only a few months ago that this same government suddenly eliminated bridge tolls in HRM and announced it was reducing the HST and other taxes.

Now? Oops, maybe they should have grasped the financial implications of those moves and looked ahead.

Short-sighted is the polite word.

I hope the government reconsiders these steps and supports our writers, publishers, artists, and historic sites. We need their contributions and inspiration more than ever.
