As a kid, I had this small, colorful radio.

One random day, I decided to take it apart to try and understand how it worked, and after unscrewing a bunch of parts and curiously playing with the speaker's strong magnets, I tried putting everything back together.

To my shock, despite my repeated attempts, I failed.

I was scolded for taking apart something that worked perfectly fine, and despite the fact that someone else managed to fix the radio later, that event ended up marking me for life.

Why do we discourage young people from taking apart things that work?

Is it only safe to look into something when it needs to be fixed?

Should we build systems that are only easy to use, or also to take apart and understand?

National Day at the Spanish Embassy in Ethiopia was a blast!

A spotless performance by Spanish guitarist Raúl Viela

A sumptuous buffet by some of the best spots in Addis: Limetree Kazanchies, HOTTO, Koba Patisserie and Bakery

And, last, but most certainly not least, an exciting session by our quartet with Miliyon Adnew on congas & cajon, Nahom solomon on bass, Hayu on vocals, and myself Carlo Ertola on guitar and voice.

Happy International Music Day! 🎶

Did you know the International Music Council declared October 1st as a day to celebrate music’s global power back in 1975?

Here in Ethiopia, we’re especially lucky because our musical heritage is deeply rich: unique instruments, scales you won’t hear elsewhere, rhythms that tell stories, layers of polyphony, and spiritual meanings woven in sound.

As we mark this day, let it be a reminder that we carry one of the world’s most distinct musical cultures. It’s not just heritage, it’s alive!

As we walk into an era where the borders of our humanness are becoming blurred, this multimedia exhibition will provide an unfinished roadmap into the exotic landscapes of human intelligence and its origin.

It will not only remind us of how special we are, but it will hopefully redefine the way we relate to and interface with other intelligences such as AI, animals, trees, and more.

Another great Saturday doing what I love.

Today I was at the UN Portal in Addis Ababa with Sofoniyas Tesfaye and Milo Traditional Band taking care of the sound and introducing Ethiopian music and instruments to Smukfest attendees in Denmark.

It was such an incredible and inspiring exchange. Countries should invest more in these kinds of initiatives to create sustainable peace rather than spending billions on weapons of mass destruction.

On September 1, 2025, I’ll be sharing something very close to my heart: my first ever multimedia exhibition.

It’s called “Becoming Human”, and it will bring together 11 photographs, 11 songs, and a book with 11 chapters, all stitched together by threads of vulnerability, transformation, and the raw beauty of being alive.
