Meet James and Hélène, owners of The Commute Café located on The Broadway in the heart of St. Ives town centre.

The Commute has been part of our town for four years and has become a hub for cyclists and the wider community searching for the perfect stop off point for coffee, lunch, cake and more… offering a cool place to relax, chat and enjoy some delights from their freshly prepared, award winning menu.

They also have an alcohol licence and are now proud to offer outside catering to local businesses for meetings plus parties, events and wakes etc…

Starting from a simple idea of great coffee, a love of cycling and a space where people could refuel and connect The Commute Café grew into the community hub that it is today; in fact many people visit daily because of the friendly neighbourhood atmosphere, lovely food and great coffee and if you are served by Hélène you can even practise your conversational French!

Nestled in the heart of St Ives, The Commute Café is more than just a place to grab a coffee—it’s a story of passion, resilience, and community.

Many people feel networking is not for them because their first experience involved pressurised selling and a hard push to sign into a contract at the end of the first visit.

Not all clubs are like this, so don’t write networking off as “not for me” if you have had one bad experience. Many groups offer a far more relaxed, informal style of networking where you can slowly get to know people and visit a number of times before deciding if you would like to join.

Look for a group that you feel confident and comfortable attending to get the most out of it.

Slightly different meeting for us this month in that we had an impromptu business mastermind session.

One of our members asked if he could pull from the collective business experience of the members to help him overcome some obstacles he has hit within his business. We love these sessions as they really encapsulate what the club is all about.

We started with the member giving us a brief overview of the issues he is currently facing. We then split the session into two parts:

Part 1 – We opened up the floor for questions from the other members on anything relevant to the business or issue which included; what are your goals? What are you looking to achieve immediately? What do you currently do? etc

Part 2 – Based on the answers to these questions members then suggested ways or gave tips to overcome the problems based on their own experience of running a business / businesses.

Our group is made up of a variety of business owners; some who have relatively new businesses to some who have run multi national firms or been in business for over fifty years; we have business owners who are 25 years old and some who are 70 years old with years of experience behind us, so the kind of advice and expertise gained from one of these sessions is vast.

Here are a few conversational snippets from the meeting:
‘What is your end game?’
‘How is your business structured now?’
‘It won’t run without me.’
‘Try pre-booking jobs in during quiet periods – offer a discount if it helps.’
‘Are you “the boss”?’
‘I have a fear of it not working.’
‘Try reading this book…’

Our member left the meeting with two pages of notes and we look forward to hearing the feedback on what helped.

As a group our aim is simple – local businesses helping local business. This session definitely showcased this in action.
