I’ve seen physicians spend thousands of dollars on materials that they never want to let go of. Guess what? It’s not doing any good sitting on the end-tables in your waiting room or in a brochure rack in the treatment room.

Figure out a process so that every patient is forced to walk out of the office with materials in their hands that will do one or more of these…

Educate them about their current condition with all of their possible treatment option; even those that aren’t covered by insurance, but could possibly be the best course of treatment for them (you owe it to your patients to let them know all pathways of care regardless of how it gets paid for).

Create awareness about a condition they might not be aware they have… have you looked at the bottoms of your feet to find an unsuspecting spot that could be melanoma???

Provide an opportunity to refer friends or family with materials that describe conditions your patient doesn’t have, but their loved ones may… Do you have a friend who’s pregnant? I bet her feet are killing her!

SPRING CLEANING TIME
Tomorrow morning, go to each room of your office and find the collateral that’s been sitting there since the dial-up days of AOL. If any of the literature is still relevant, dust it off and use it! Simply have the back office staff include a brochure/flyer or two with each patient’s paperwork that they are already taking home (i.e. compliance instructions).

Better yet, place a quick and simple order for plain white pocket folders (or go to Walmart and grab a stack) and stuff it with the collateral that is currently collecting dust in your office. Every time a patient checks in, give it to them to keep. When they check out, ask for it back and put their at-home instructions inside along with the literature you’ve given them to digest while they waited in the front office space, or in the treatment room.

Smiley or Surly?
Your front desk could be costing you patients.

The last time I went to the doctor's office the woman at the front desk was so unfriendly that regardless of the great physician care, I really didn't want to go back.

If you ask, I'm sure your front desk employee(s) aren't going to admit to being the trolls of your practice, but do your best to observe what's going on in the front and even ask your patients as you greet them in the treatment room if their experience is a pleasant one.

You can't control everything; but make sure you're not ignoring things that are having huge impacts on your practice reputation.

Dynamic Content. Wait, What??? What does that mean?!

Update something on your homepage regularly.

Make sure there is something on the homepage of your website that allows for consistent updates (i.e. patient stories; practice news; before and afters with text, etc.).

Marketing experts tend to overwhelm when explaining SEO strategy and the suggestion above isn't all there is to it... but start there and pat yourself on the back knowing that you're making moves and progress. Boo ya!

Having worked with various podiatric providers (from orthoses and lasers to AFOs and emollients), I’ve come to understand how certain products can become the basis of a thriving podiatry practice; products that the DPM relies on daily to provide optimal care.

So, what I wonder is – do they know? Have you taken the time to let your provider(s) know just how critical their products and/or services are to your practice success? They may know simply by the recurring orders, right? But why not take it a step further?

Consider becoming a BRAND CHAMPION. Ultimately what this means is taking the time to actively refer and promote the product in which you fully believe. Many DPMs do this without knowing; when chatting with peers and colleagues, you may discuss the products your practice couldn’t live without.
