FDM 3D printing turned 38 this year.

Scott Crump invented fused deposition modelling in 1988 — originally using a hot glue gun and a mix of polyethylene and candle wax to make a toy frog for his daughter. He patented it, co-founded Stratasys, and changed manufacturing forever.

The machines have changed a bit since then.

Everything else is a tower built on that first layer.

Too far from the bed: poor adhesion, warping, layer lifting.
Too close: nozzle drags, potential clog, squished lines that mess up dimensional accuracy.
