What is on-page SEO?

On-Page SEO is all the optimization that happens ON a specific page on your website (eg: a blog post).

On-page optimizations should be targeted to the keyword you have chosen for this page.

Example: If you are targeting the keyword ‘how does SEO work’ on a blog post, everything on your post page should be fully optimized for the keyword ‘how does SEO work’.

What are the most important on-page SEO lessons to remember?

- Don’t optimize more than one page for the same keyword!
- When using Yoast, you don’t have to get ALL the dots green (all green dots could mean you’ve over-optimized your page).
- Write for humans first, and search engine second.
- Make sure your content is easy to read, useful, and informative.
- Avoid walls of text – split it up with headings and images.

The best tool for on-page SEO on WordPress

We love Yoast! It’s an excellent plugin that does even more behind the scenes. Our team of experts think the premium version is worth the expense. It’s great for SEO professionals, and site owners alike.

This means you can optimize your own content if you want to. It’s also great for anyone who’s starting out with SEO (search engine optimization). It’s intuitive and clearly indicates what changes you should make to your page.

If you aren’t yet ready to outsource your SEO, Yoast is a solid place to start. Of course, there’s a lot more to SEO, but you’ll get there. Start small and your efforts will compound.

How do I start on-page SEO?

You can start working on your on-page SEO yourself, until you are ready to outsource to a professional SEO agency.

The optimization steps are straightforward. Concentrate on one page at a time and pay attention to the details. Make each change only where it makes sense for your content.

Start with some keyword research to make sure you’re optimizing your pages for the right keywords. Choose target keywords that work within your organization, and that your customers use to search for you online. Your most general topics should be the most important sections. All your content should fit within these categories.

A great way to start is to build a website content plan – download a free template from our website - please click below.

Step 1: Choose the target keyword for your page

First, you must choose what target keyword you would like the page to rank for.

All your SEO efforts will revolve around this keyword...

How to Create a Website Content Plan in 5 Simple Steps

What is a website content plan?

A website content plan is an overview of the content on your website. It contains a list of all the content you have or want on your website, and it displays the content hierarchy.

Your content plan helps you to organise your content in the most logical, easy to understand way possible.

It’s usually laid out as headings (examples: page names, the names of your products or services, blog categories, and blog post names). This makes it much easier to decide what to put where. It also helps you to decide which is the most important content on your website and therefore what you should write first.

If you plan your website in advance, it’ll be much easier to chop and change your structure and content until it all makes sense for your business, and for users and search engines to understand.

What’s in a good website content plan?

A good website content plan shows:

- The content you already have.
- The content you need to add.
- The hierarchy or layout of all your content.

Why is website hierarchy so important?

The hierarchy of your website tells search engines and users:

- What your site is about
- What the most important content on your site is (hint: it’s at the top of the hierarchy)
- Where to find related content

Imagine that your website structure is like a pyramid. The most important information is at the top, and those top pages branch down into sub-categories relating to them.

Do you want to increase your website SEO in the fastest ways possible?

If you have a WordPress website, this checklist is for you. Our expert team has got together to choose the fastest ways you can increase your website SEO, starting today! It’s not easy to choose the best SEO methods from the hundreds of changes you could make, but we’ve done it.

Use this checklist to increase website SEO, and boost your search rankings and website traffic.

SEO (search engine optimization) is a long-term project, but you can start now. Over time, you can keep working on your website and keeping increasing your SEO.

1. Choose the keywords you want to rank for

The keywords you want to rank for should be the search terms that a user will type into a search engine to search for your organisation.

Use phrases instead of single words

The term ‘keyword’ can be misleading to anyone new to SEO. We use phrases instead of single words because phrases are more specific. They usually have a lower search volume (i.e. a lower number of searches each month). However, they also have less competition and are more targeted, which means they have a higher conversion rate. This means that if people click these more specific phrases, they are ultimately more likely to convert into a customer or lead on your website.

Avoid keywords that are too general

Try to avoid single or too general words like ‘cars’. Choose something more like ‘used cars for sale surrey uk’. The phrase is much more specific and is more likely to get you traffic and better conversions.

This phrase would also better match a searcher’s SEARCH INTENT. If your page ranks in the search results and a user clicks your link, page that more closely match search intent convert far better.

Leverage ‘Local SEO’ by targeting geographical keywords
If you offer services in Surrey UK, use the location name in your target keyword, like ‘cars for sale in surrey uk’. You can replicate this for multiple areas that you service.

Keyword research

If you’re stuck for ideas, or you want to check the search volume and search difficulty of keywords you like, use Ubersuggest.

Create a single website account with Ubersuggest and add your website and location. Then look at the menu on the left side of the page. Navigate to ‘Keyword Research’ – ‘Keyword Overview’...

If you’re not ready to outsource your SEO and want to do a DIY SEO audit on your WordPress website, here is a simple checklist for you.

An SEO audit can help you discover errors and issues on your WordPress website that might be hurting your search engine rankings. If you fix these, you could boost your search rankings and increase traffic to your website!

What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is an in-depth look at your website to find any on-page SEO, technical SEO, or off-page SEO problems that you might have. SEO audits can uncover simple issues like missing image alt tags, incorrect use of HTML headings, and slow site speed. They can also find more complex problems like a lack of internal links, duplicate content, or poor page indexing. All these issues are fixable, and you can probably DIY them! If you run into trouble, you are always welcome to ask us questions.

Who should get an SEO audit?

If you have a WordPress website and want to drive traffic to it, you need an SEO audit.

If you improve all your ranking factors, you can boost your website’s search rankings and drive visitors to your site. The more activity on your website, the more search engines will push your site up the search rankings and you’ll compound your success!

Google has more than 200 factors it uses to determine where a website will rank in its search engine results pages (SERPs). An SEO audit helps you to discover what SEO issues you can fix to improve your chances of ranking for your target keywords.

When is the best time to get an SEO audit?

If your website is up and running, the best time to get an SEO audit is yesterday!

Ideally, SEO should be considered when planning a website, long before it’s built. However, that isn’t possible for websites that are already live so get going as fast as possible.

If we do an SEO audit for a client, we start with keyword research and their list of preferred target keywords, and then audit their website based on those. But there’s no bad time to do an SEO audit. The sooner you uncover and fix any SEO problems you have, the better. Your site is not static in search rankings and is constantly moving up and down. If you start your DIY SEO audit today, you can boost your rankings as soon as possible.

There are some basics of SEO (search engine optimization) that you should know and start to implement on your own website.

While it’s a massive topic, it’s always a good idea to start small with SEO. Start working on the basics and expand your efforts over time. SEO builds upon itself and your reach will grow the more you work on your SEO.

Here is a list of things you can start to tackle on your own. It’s not an exhaustive list of every aspect of search engine optimization, but it’s a good place for you to start yourself.

If you see value in the work you’re doing but run out of time to do it all yourself, you can hire an SEO professional to carry on.

1. Build a list of target keywords

These are the keywords (or more likely, the phrases), that you think your target audience will use as search terms when they look for you online.

This step requires extensive research into what your target market is searching for online. Take note of the wording they are using.

Check the search volume of each keyword you choose. The search volume refers to the average number of searches for that keyword per month, over the previous 12 months. You want to choose a mix of search volumes – some keywords should have a high search volume, and some lower volumes.

The higher volume keywords usually have more competition from businesses who want to rank for them, which makes it more difficult for your website to rank. The lower search volume keywords usually have less competition, which will make it easier for you to rank for those.

The shorter your keywords (eg a single word, or a two-word phrase like “seo agency”) will be more general and therefore have much higher competition. This makes it more difficult to rank for them. Longer keywords (i.e. longer phrases like “seo agency in surrey united kingdom” will likely have less competition and will probably be easier to rank for.

Do you need a simple checklist to write SEO blog posts that can be easily optimized for search engines?

Here are 6 simple steps to follow, so it’s really easy to understand how to write SEO blog posts.

Make sure your users find you on search engines by following these 6 steps for every blog post you write:

1. Choose the keyword you want your blog post to rank for:

Think about the search intent someone may have when searching this keyword.

Search this keyword on Google and examine search results.

Ask yourself:

- Does your blog post you plan to write fit in with the other results?

- Will your blog post answer the search intent of the person searching?

This keyword will be the TARGET KEYWORD of the blog post you’re going to write.

Understanding off-page SEO definitions will help you build an off-site strategy to boost your SEO and search rankings.

Off-page SEO includes the strategies and actions taken OFF or OUTSIDE of your website to improve its search engine ranking.

This type of SEO includes building your reputation and authority through off-site activity. These could be through backlinks, social media mentions, and other external signals. This shows search engines that your site is considered to be useful and valuable. The more valuable your website is, the higher it’s likely to rank on search engines.

Ad Impression
An ad impression is a metric used in online advertising to count the number of times an advertisement is displayed (i.e. seen by a user), regardless of whether it was clicked or not. Example: Google displayed your Google Adwords campaign ad in the search results, but no one clicked it – therefore eyes could have seen it and made but no one clicked it. Other ad campaigns could include Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn ads.

Backlinks
Backlinks are links from a page on one website (Website A) to another website (Website B). They are like a vote from Website B to say that Website A has good content, so Website B is telling its users to go there. Search engines analyze the quality of backlinks to estimate how important the page it’s linking to is. Lots of backlinks are great, but you don’t want to collect spammy links. It’s definitely ‘quality over quantity’ for backlinks!

Guest Blogging
Guest blogging is when you write a piece of content that is published on another website’s blog. This is often done in exchange for a follow backlink, which can really boost your SEO.

10x Content
Content that is at least ten times better than the current top-ranking result for the target keyword.

Alt Text
Alt text (alternative text) is the text description of an image on a web page. Screen readers and search engines both use alt tags so they’re very important for SEO.

Anchor Text
Anchor text is the visible, clickable text of a hyperlink. Example: Here is my sentence and this is my anchor text (that links to this page for reference). Anchor text should always match the page it is linking to. Google uses anchor text to understand the content of the linked page.

Breadcrumb Navigation
Breadcrumb navigation is an internal linking system on your website. They give users and search engines a clear trail to follow around your site. Breadcrumbs enhance user experience AND help Google to make sense of your website.

It’s really useful to understand technical SEO definitions so you know what technical issues must be checked on your website.

Some of these issues can be checked and resolved by website owners building their own websites. Others are more complicated and are best looked at by a professional web designer. However, you should know what these mean so you know what to ask about!

404 Error
The 404 Not Found HTTP status code means the website couldn’t find the requested page or resource. This means the page link is broken or has been deleted, or just can’t be found. 404 errors are bad for SEO as they create a bad user experience because the page they want to visit doesn’t exist. Google doesn’t like them for the same reason.

Bounce Rate
The bounce rate is the percentage of visitors that take no further action after landing on a website, like clicking to a different page, commenting, or adding an item to their cart. In other words – they land on the website and then bounce off. A high bounce rate is bad for SEO because it shows Google that your visitors were not interested in the content you displayed, and they left your website.

Broken Link
A broken link is a link on a web page that points to a non-existent (or “dead”) page or resource. Broken links can internal (a link to another page on your site) or external (a link to another website). These are bad for SEO and should be fixed.

These are general SEO definitions that will help you to better understand search engine optimization and how it works.

Content Relevance
This measures how relevant your website is to the search intent, needs, interests, or preferences of your reader. It’s very important to generate relevant, useful content to rank on Google. Google always wants to give the searcher the best possible answer to whatever they searched for.

Cornerstone Content
Cornerstone content is the collection of pages on your website that you most want to rank for in search engine results. You would likely also use internal linking to point many other pages to these pages, further demonstrating their importance to users and to Google.

Crawler
A crawler is software designed to browse the internet systematically. Crawlers allow search engines to discover and process website pages so that they can be indexed and shown in search results.

eCommerce website owners constantly struggle with abandoned carts.

Users arrive in their online shop, add several products to their shopping carts, and leave the website. Shop owners want and need to know why!

It’s extremely frustrating for ecommerce website owners. It can also be difficult to know for certain WHY it’s happening. There are a range of issues to check, and fixes you can implement, to help solve abandoned carts.

1. Check your website analytics

Before you do anything else, you need to compare how many users are landing on your website vs how many orders you are receiving. If you have low or no website traffic, abandoned carts might not be your problem. You might just have too little traffic to show significant conversions to sales.

If you DO have website traffic, then check which pages users are visiting. They must be landing on shop and product pages, or ecommerce category pages, if there’s any hope of them buying anything.

Google Analytics is the perfect tool for this. It should be setup and running from the moment your website is live. This way, you will have a history of data to check.

2. Specialised ecommerce tracking analytics are needed to track abandoned carts

The standard Google Analytics setup does not include detailed ecommerce tracking. This tracking must be specifically setup on your ecommerce website so you can see accurate user activity.
