Many people seem to think that having a presence on Facebook is not worth it. However, for small businesses and new start-ups it is an excellent way of creating a following and a community.
You can build a community on your page in a number of ways, including:
- Posting useful, relevant, and interesting links.
- Asking fans to contribute with comments.
- Organising contests and promotions.
- Providing a place to leave reviews and other feedback.

Photos are the most-engaging content on the internet, with visual posts producing much higher engagement than text only posts. It follows that Instagram is a great platform to engage your fans and keep them coming back for more.

Instagram has a younger audience than Facebook. Nearly 60% of internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 use Instagram compared to 30% between the ages of 30 and 49 years old.

But it remains important to have a presence on Instagram even if your target market falls above this younger age group, as it presents an early opportunity to influence the younger generation and introduce your brand and services to them.

Getting your website up and running is one way of announcing that your venture is ‘open for business’. But just having a website is one thing. Updating it from time to time with new content is also very important.

This year we mark Mandela Day after a week of devastation and destruction. It is disappointing to think that after nearly 3 decades of the ‘New South Africa’ we have come so far yet our country and its people are still troubled. I reflected on what the father of our nation said:
“AS LONG AS MANY OF OUR PEOPLE STILL LIVE IN UTTER POVERTY, AS LONG AS CHILDREN STILL LIVE UNDER PLASTIC COVERS, AS LONG AS MANY OF OUR PEOPLE ARE STILL WITHOUT JOBS, NO SOUTH AFRICAN SHOULD REST AND WALLOW IN THE JOY OF FREEDOM.”

The social media landscape is constantly changing and yes, it is difficult to keep up with what is trending and where people are looking. As a small business, however, it is important to have a social media presence. Whilst you may not always see direct sales from Facebook, it is vitally important for businesses to have a page.

Why?
According to Social Media Today, 60% of all social media users are active on Facebook and there are 80 million small business pages. Plus the average person spends 10 min per day on Facebook.

In fact, many potential clients will look on Facebook to see if a business exists and how current their posts are. If a business is not there, then they may as well not exist.
