It's no secret that the country's recent foot-and-mouth disease crisis has since become a supply-chain shock affecting farms, abattoirs, cold stores, transporters, exporters and foreign markets. In a recent article, Ernst van Biljon [Dean of Research at IMM Graduate School] writes that a Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy study put the five-year cost to the livestock sector at R13.1 billion, including R11.3 billion in lost production and R1.8 billion in lost export revenue.

The government declared FMD a β€œnational disaster” in February 2026, but the wider problem is how quickly animal-health restrictions spread through the meat trade. Van Biljon writes that once movement controls or export closures begin, animals cannot move as planned, abattoir throughput is disrupted, meat can be stranded and cold stores become holding points rather than export links.

Beef exports are estimated to have fallen 26% year on year, while some bovine meat categories were down 56.6% by mid-2026 and shipments to parts of the Middle East reportedly dropped by 65% to 95%. Markets including China, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia and the UK have kept restrictions on South African beef, while the UAE, Jordan, Hong Kong and Kuwait have continued accepting products under revised certification conditions.

According to recent headlines, South African authorities need better-trained officials to investigate and prosecute banking scams as criminals use more advanced digital methods to steal money. Myles Illidge reports that Nelson Mandela University cyberlaw professor Sizwe Mtuze warned fraudsters are increasingly using electronic channels, stolen OTPs and impersonation tactics to access personal information and bank accounts.

Mtuze said online banking fraud has grown sharply because β€œas technology improves, so do the crooks”. Illidge cites him as saying criminals often pretend to be banks or service providers, using links, fake offers and verification-style questions to trick consumers into sharing details that are later used β€œnefariously”.

Consumers should be wary of unexpected calls from anyone claiming to be from a bank, especially when personal information is requested. Illidge quotes Mtuze as saying people should hang up and call back on a confirmed number, because β€œwe are too trusting about what is happening over the Internet” and in digital spaces.

In case some of our readers have missed it, a number of UFS researchers were honoured at the 2026 NRF Awards, with Dr Cobus van Breda winning the Societal Impact Award for work through the Science-for-the-Future unit. Andre Damons reminds readers that the award recognises research that actually improves people’s lives and includes a R500,000 grant for research-related activities.

Van Breda said that he felt β€œhumble, thankful and very proud,” especially because the award followed peer evaluation based on evidence of societal impact. Damons notes that the Science-for-the-Future unit’s work focuses on continuing professional development for mathematics and science teachers, particularly in rural South Africa, with more than 125,000 project participants benefiting during 2026.

Zurika Murray, a lecturer in the Department of Genetics, won the Research Excellence Award for Next-Generation Researchers, receiving a R75,000 grant, trophy and certificate. Damons quotes her as saying the award was β€œa solid nod” that her research career is moving in the right direction, while her work examines how psilocin affects gene expression linked to serotonin and other neurotransmitters using cerebral organoids.

Just days ago, reports began saying that South Africans could soon have a clearer legal benchmark for private cannabis possession, with draft regulations proposing a 750g limit per person! Malcolm Libera cites cannabis and environmental lawyer Paul-Michael Keichel, who said the rules form part of the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act but remain in draft form and are not yet fully in force.

The framework follows the Constitutional Court’s 2018 judgment decriminalising adult private cannabis use, possession and cultivation within limits. Libera quotes Keichel as saying the proposed quantity is β€œbeing placed at 750g,” although users would still need to show that their cannabis is for private and personal use rather than conduct outside constitutional protection.

Several enforcement questions remain unresolved, including whether the 750g limit applies to wet or dry cannabis. Keichel warned that β€œif it’s 750g of wet cannabis, you’re potentially committing a crime for possessing water,” while extracts, oils, vapes, edibles and shared private spaces also need clearer treatment to avoid an β€œenforcement nightmare”.
