*Respect the Trade*
Being creative is a wonderful thing. More people creating, designing and expressing ideas is something to celebrate.
But let's not confuse using a tool with mastering a profession.
Using Canva doesn't automatically make someone a graphic designer, just as fixing a leaking tap doesn't make someone a plumber, or owning a camera doesn't make someone a professional photographer.
Every trade has knowledge, standards and years of experience behind it. Graphic design for commercial print is no different.
A design that looks great on a screen is only the beginning. Professional print involves understanding production, colour management, typography, image quality, substrates, finishing processes, and preparing artwork that can be reproduced consistently and accurately. That's a craft learned through experience—not a button you click.
This isn't about gatekeeping creativity or criticising the tools people use. AI and Canva are just that—tools. The real value has always been, and always will be, the knowledge behind the tool.
Unfortunately, our industry is increasingly being reduced to "anyone can do it." That doesn't elevate creativity—it diminishes the years of dedication, problem-solving and technical expertise that skilled designers and printers bring to every job.
Respect the electrician. Respect the plumber. Respect the mechanic. Respect the printer. Respect the graphic designer.
Because every trade deserves the respect it has earned.
And good print has never happened by accident.
