🚙💨 Have you heard of Albertinia?
Well…our travel plans didn’t quite go according to plan. 😂 We had to change our flights and drive back from Cape Town to PE.
I’ll be honest — I’m personally a fly there and back kind of girl ✈️😂 but I’m actually SO glad we did this drive.
I haven’t travelled this route by car in years, and it reminded me just how many little hidden gems there are along the way.
So, first stop on our little road-trip discovery series: Albertinia! 🌿
Tucked away along the N2 at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, Albertinia is a small Western Cape town with a big personality. It was laid out in 1900 and is named after Johannes Rudolph Albertyn, the first Dutch Reformed minister to serve the community.
And here’s a fun fact: Albertinia is famous for its Aloe ferox! 🌵 The area has a large concentration of Cape Aloe and is home to two aloe factories, making the town a rather special little stop along the Garden Route.
But our favourite discovery?
Aloe Stop and the farm-stall finds! 😍
We stocked up on some of the BEST biltong and droëwors we have ever nibbled on, farm-made sauces, random little farm-stall goodies, biscuits, Dirkie condensed milk (yes, obviously 😂), and even fresh bunches of lilies.
Let’s just say…the snacks didn’t exactly make it home for the pretty photo. 🤣
The biltong and droëwors didn’t even survive the journey back to PE!
There’s something about stopping at these little roadside places, chatting to the locals and finding things you simply wouldn’t pick up at a shopping centre.
So next time you’re travelling from Cape Town to PE — or PE to Cape Town — make the stop in Albertinia.
Get off the N2, explore a little, grab some local goodies and take your time.
Because sometimes the unexpected detour ends up being the best part of the trip. 🤍
Albertinia…you were such a lovely surprise.
