REMEMBERING PROKID

On 9 August 2018, South African hip-hop was mourning the loss of one of its most influential voices - Linda "ProKid" Mkhize, better known as ProKid.

The Soweto-born rapper passed away on 8 August 2018, aged 37, after suffering a seizure. News of his death sent shockwaves through South African hip-hop, with artists and fans paying tribute to a rapper who had helped shape the sound and identity of local hip-hop.

ProKid wasn't simply rapping in English over American-inspired beats. He made township life, Soweto culture and South African identity central to his music, famously incorporating isiZulu into his lyrics.

His breakthrough came with "Uthini Ngo Pro?", and he went on to release projects including Heads & Tails, DNA, Snakes & Ladders and The Real Deal.

What made ProKid special was his ability to tell stories that felt familiar to South Africans. His music represented where he came from - and showed that local stories could stand proudly within hip-hop.

Eight years after his passing, his influence can still be felt in SA hip-hop.
