Happy Youth Day 🇿🇦
On June 16, 1976, thousands of students in Soweto protested against the government's decision to enforce Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in schools.
The peaceful protest turned violent when police opened fire on the demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of students.
Some accounts estimate the number of students murdered to be as high as 700 .
The Soweto Uprising marked a major turning point in South African history, signaling the end of submissiveness by the Black population and the beginning of a new militancy in the struggle against apartheid.
It galvanised international support for the anti-apartheid movement and exposed the brutality of the apartheid regime .
Today, Youth Day is a public holiday in South Africa that honours the brave students who participated in the Soweto Uprising and recognises the sacrifices made by the youth in the fight for freedom and democracy.
Various events and activities take place across the country to celebrate the youth and their contribution to the ongoing struggle for equality and justice .
Youth Day serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience of the youth who stood up against injustice and oppression. It is an opportunity for South Africans to reflect on the progress made towards educational equality and social justice, and to advocate for the rights and well-being of young people in the country .
The events that triggered the Soweto Uprising can be traced back to the policies of the apartheid government, which resulted in the introduction of the Bantu Education Act in 1953.
This act was designed to train and fit Africans for their role as labourers, workers, and servants in the evolving apartheid society.
The act also led to segregated and unequal education, with far less being spent on Black children compared to White children .
