This extraordinary level of curiosity, creativity and dedication to doing hospitality differently is exactly why we are so deeply proud to work alongside the passionate team at Schoone Oordt Country House.
This team never seem to settle for simply giving guests somewhere beautiful to stay. There is always another idea, another reason to visit Swellendam, another experience being dreamed up around the table.
And this one is rather brilliant.
A Murder Mystery Weekend, a winemaker’s dinner with Lozärn Wines, beautiful accommodation and, I suspect, a fair amount of suspicious behaviour around the dinner table.
This is what independent hospitality does so beautifully: people who care deeply, keep creating.

A new Winelands discovery through my lens.

I recently had the opportunity to spend time at Zomerlust Boutique Hotel and rather than trying to capture it through a polished sales pitch, I simply took a walk through the property and allowed the story to unfold.

Zomerlust is not flashy or trying too hard. It is a beautifully restored historic address, filled with the little details and a genuine sense of place.

With only 15 rooms and SMEUL Restaurant at its heart, it feels intimate, personal and deeply connected to Paarl and the community behind this new boutique discovery.

We are very proud to welcome Zomerlust Boutique Hotel to the Sustainable Luxury Africa family and look forward to sharing more of this special Winelands discovery with you.

Some places you visit and think… how did I not know this was here?

The Mungo Mill at Old Nick Village in Plettenberg Bay is one of those extraordinary South African discoveries.

To stand inside the working mill, hear the rhythm of the looms and watch thread slowly become beautiful cloth is quite something. It is craftsmanship, history, patience and purpose all woven together.

And perhaps what I love most is that this is not tucked away behind closed doors. You can actually visit, wander through and see the story happening right in front of you.

Honestly, what an extraordinary story. What an extraordinary discovery.

And one more reminder that South Africa is filled with incredible people making incredible things, often much closer than we realise.
