You can’t force it:

Copywriting should not create demand. (It can but it shouldn’t.) Because creating demand for an unwanted—or worse, unneeded—product is boundlessly difficult: you’re going against the current.
“Copywriters don’t create demand,” said internet marketing pioneer, Ken McCarthy, “we channel existing demand.”

We do this because, simply put, advertising to a proven need is easier: you’re going with the flow.

“We’re not paddling,” Ken said, “we’re sailing. We put up our sails and let the wind take us.”

In the 1950s, Betty Crocker put her name to the world’s first instant cake mix, a combination of dry ingredients to which one simply added water and ‘hey presto” you had batter ready to bake.
The only problem was, housewives weren’t buying. But why? Aunt Betty approached Edward Bernays to do consumer testing and find out.
What he discovered was housewives felt too guilty to use instant cake mix because it seemed to make the process too easy and made them feel like they weren’t being good wives and moms by taking a shortcut.
Ed told Betty to write ‘"add one egg” on the back of the box.
The next thing you know? The product began to fly off the shelves.
And that’s kind of what we aim to do for our clients.
