It sounds like a provocative question until you look at what is already happening on the world’s roads.
China is rapidly moving autonomous freight from testing environments into real world logistics. Autonomous heavy duty trucks are now being deployed in commercial operations, with some operating on designated public roads and highways.
Equipped with cameras, radar, LiDAR and artificial intelligence, these trucks can detect obstacles, maintain lanes, regulate speed, keep safe following distances and respond to changing road conditions. The goal is not simply to remove the driver, but to make freight transport safer, more consistent and more efficient.
The technology is advancing quickly. In Ordos, autonomous heavy duty trucks have been operating in platoons, with a lead vehicle carrying safety personnel while following trucks operate autonomously. The technology is also attracting major investment as companies prepare for larger-scale deployment.
Pony. ai, for example, has announced plans to deploy hundreds of autonomous heavy duty trucks in China, targeting long haul freight, bulk transportation and port logistics.
But this is where the conversation gets interesting.
A human driver can make a dangerous decision in seconds speeding, reckless overtaking, driving while fatigued or failing to maintain a safe following distance. An autonomous system does not get tired, distracted or impatient.
But can AI handle everything the road can throw at it?
A blown tyre. A reckless motorist. Roadworks. Heavy rain. An animal suddenly crossing the highway. Or an unpredictable situation the system has never encountered before.
The technology may be getting smarter, but trust is another matter.
