Beyond Covid-19 lies turbulence, change and opportunity.

South Africans must insist on innovative solutions and new policies to ensure that when the country emerges from this governance and economic crises, it does so not only aware of the country’s weaknesses, but also primed to effect the necessary changes, writes Pieter du Toit of News24.

With this in mind I had to look at my business through different eyes or be lost in the past. Prior to lockdown I was consulting to a broad base of clients, from Bankers, Event Managers, Artists, Guesthouse Owner’s, Estate Agents, Lawyers, Fast Food Franchisees, Vehicle Fitment Centres, etc..

The idea about any level of normalcy at the end of this month is utterly absurb. Normal is dead. Let that sink in. But hope is very much alive!

So, changing or adjusting marketing strategies typically involves analyzing your current marketing practices and determining where and when adjustments are required, two key areas to look at are:-

The Question: Should I continue to promote my business on social media? How?

The current pandemic is making us question everything we do both as people and for business. However, regardless of what’s thrown our way, we and our businesses always need to fight to survive.

Therefore, I have told my clients to continue to promote their business on social media as normal. Most businesses outside of a few industries like travel or hospitality are still operating normally. As long as that’s the case, you’re missing out on opportunities if you’re not promoting your business on social media.

With a recession undoubtedly about to hit us, as well as competing with ongoing conversations about the pandemic and its effects, the ROI of those promotions may go down.

To build long-term trust with potential clients so your business can thrive once everything gets back to normal, it’s critical that you don’t simply pull the plug and instead hold the course.

You probably want to do a sanity check and ensure that your promotions are as compassionate and empathetic as possible in light of what we’re going through.

Perhaps make the content more educational or offer special help if you can afford to.

I think rather than “promote my business,” it’s much better to consider how you can help people in this difficult time. Don’t sell products and services. Instead, think of ways to give back to the community by providing information of value to people via social media.

The Question: Should my social media strategy change? How?

When we can’t meet people face to face, video is an excellent tool. I recommend that social media marketers step up their use of video.

Mirror neurons are a group of cells in the premotor cortex and inferior parietal cortex of our brains. These neurons are fascinating because they not only activate when we perform an action—biting into an apple—they also fire when we observe somebody else performing the same action!

People unconsciously bond with actors and artists and speakers they see on screens and on stage because of mirror neurons. Mirror neurons also help explain why we feel that we “know” movie stars and television personalities. Our brains tell us that we’ve been in their personal space because of the feeling of proximity generated by our seeing them up close on the screen.

The same concepts can be applied to videos. Businesses can use the concept of mirror neurons to build fans by paying close attention to camera placement and how you interact with the camera:
Crop the video so the video presenter appears to be in the viewer’s personal space. Typically, this means placing the camera about 4 feet away or using a lens to make it seem that you’re that close to the camera. When you present, look directly into the camera as much as possible.
. Adopt a friendly and open approach by imagining the camera is a close personal friend.
.. Have an interesting background in the room where you present.

There is never a better time to train and develop yourself and your team than in an economic downturn. There is always an opportunity on the other side, as companies try to recover and right their businesses. NO BUSINESS CAN SURVIVE WITHOUT THE:-

1. Consistent inflow of new customers, and

2. Upsell and Cross-sell to existing customers

How is this even remotely possible when, in particular, franchisees are paying enormous marketing royalties to their franchisors for the production of standardised social media post content, may I add, in most cases of HD quality, just to receive, in most cases between 4 and 12 likes on average to their posts, the majority of which most probably are colleague's, friends and family. ROI is non-existent in this case, in other words you’re spending much more on advertising, indirectly perhaps, than what it is producing in new and existing customer spent. Remember, at this point, that very loyal customer of yours is the one your competitor is trying to win over, and in the cases I know of and have assisted with, are successfully using alternate marketing strategies to achieve this.
In most cases, to the franchisor or marketing agency it's a PR exercise, to you it's survival.

So, if you’re a non-franchised business, you can make decisions about changing your marketing strategies quickly and effectively, but if you’re a franchisee this could be slightly more difficult but not impossible.
