​If Raven has a thorn in her paw, she doesn’t stop. She’s a Malinois; she’ll run until she hits the redline.

​But just because she can run doesn't mean she’s operating at peak velocity. That tiny "leak" in her system eventually leads to a total failure.

​Business is no different.

​I was debating with Edwin Mbugua this week about the "Leaking Oil" problem. Most agencies are happy to sell you a R12M "brand refresh" while your actual conversion funnel is a mess.

​They give you a new coat of paint, but they leave the engine leaking oil.

​The market is currently in a food coma.

Most of your competitors haven't opened a laptop in 72 hours. They are "switching off."

​That sounds nice. But there is a problem.

​A high-drive machine (like a business, or a Belgian Malinois) hates zero-momentum.

​If I don't give Raven a job, she doesn't just "chill." She finds a job—usually dismantling a sprinkler system or pinching other things on the farm to leave outside as chew toys.

Entropy implies that anything left unattended starts to degrade.

​While the world is sleeping, we are entering the Maintenance Phase.

Most marketing reports are designed to hide failure. Here is how to read yours.

It is the 17th of the month. You probably just got your "November Performance Report" from your agency.

It probably looks great. Lots of green arrows. Big numbers for "Reach" and "Impressions."

I am going to give you the cheat code to read it.

Agencies (the bad ones) use "Vanity Metrics" to distract you from the fact that they didn't make you any money.

Step 1: The CTRL+F Test Open the PDF. Search for the word "Revenue" or "Qualified Lead." If you can't find it on Page 1, you are paying for "activity," not results.

Step 2: The "Cost Per" Test Ignore "Total Clicks." Look for "CPA" (Cost Per Acquisition). If they spent R10,000 to get you 100 clicks, that’s fine. But if they spent R10,000 to get you 1 paying customer, you are lighting cash on fire.

Step 3: The "So What?" Test Look at the summary. Does it say: "We increased impressions by 40%." (Who cares?) Or does it say: "We used the traffic spike to capture 15 emails, which are now in the nurturing sequence."

The Lesson: You don't need a degree in marketing to audit your agency. You just need to stop accepting "Reach" as currency. You can't pay salaries with Reach.
