Last week Friday, Kirsten, co-founder of SA Diabetes Advocacy, had the opportunity to present to some of the key medical stakeholders in South Africa including representatives from the National Department of Health, Private Funders and Health Care Providers.
She addressed the critical need for expanding access to continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in South Africa, particularly within the public healthcare system. Despite its proven benefits in improving diabetes management and quality of life, CGM remains out of reach for many. It’s time for healthcare providers, private funders, and the government to collaborate and ensure that CGM is no longer seen as a luxury but rather as standard diabetes care. Together, we can transform diabetes care and create a healthier future for all South Africans.
"My dream is a South Africa where every person with diabetes can access the tools they need to manage their condition effectively. A South Africa where the fear of diabetes complications is reduced, and where people can live full, healthy lives, contributing to their families, communities, and the economy. The diabetes narrative needs to change."
A huge thank you to FIND, The Helmsley Charitable Trust and SEMDSA for making this stakeholder engagement a possibility.
