There was the internet. And it was good. People could market themselves by building websites and adding an SEO (search engine optimisation, more commonly known as Adwords) campaign or two and they were visible.
If they were smart, their website blogs brought them business with a bit of consistent effort.
Then, one day, the internet mushroomed.
More and more people began to add more and more content (blogs, videos, infographics, white papers, case studies) and the internet became an overcrowded place, filled with ‘stuff’ - some of it not particularly good.
In an effort to stand out from the crowd there was the rise of click bait - fake news using salacious titles in a bid to get clicks - and before we knew it, the internet was drowning in lousy, badly written misinformation.
Then, there appeared a hero, in the form of content marketing.
Content marketing is a form of communication that favours well-written, useful content.
The idea is to provide this valuable content consistently to build up a following. One does this by posting blogs and other content, after which you use social media to attract an audience back to your website.
Some really clever people got together and decided to save the internet from the claws of click bait and other murky, undesirable elements.
They came up with a process that meant that you could succeed, if you just followed a few straight forward steps.
It is a bit of work. It involves learning a new habit (regular, consistent blogging), getting social (learning how to post great status updates), and nurturing a few friendships so that you can build links to you website.
There are a few other, slightly more complicated steps too. But nothing too taxing.
And to learn these, you can do a content marketing course - freely available on social platforms like Udemy.
Or you can elicit the help of the wise man, or fairy godmother (whichever role in the story you’re more comfortable with) to coach you through the process.
Because with a coach, you get to learn all the ropes of content marketing. I’ll take your team, or you, through the process of producing consistent, useful content, how to get it out there so that you’ll be heard above the clamour, and how to do so in a valuable way that your target audience will love.
What have you got to lose? I even offer an initial session for free, so that you can really see if this content marketing thing is for you.
