For nearly two decades as 'Your Web AddiCT,' my entire life has been about finding, publishing, and amplifying ideas that matter. This past weekend felt like the culmination of that entire journey.
My son was born just days before I was due on stage at TEDxJohannesburg Countdown. Holding him, running on just a few hours of sleep, I was overwhelmed by a profound sense of urgency. The event's theme, building a "greener, fairer, thriving future," suddenly stopped being an abstract concept and became the most personal, immediate mission of my life.
I couldn't not share this talk.
I am filled with gratitude for Kelo Kubu, Ithateng Mokgoro (Thati), and the entire army of TEDxJohannesburg volunteers for pulling off a truly world-class event at the Nirox Sculpture Park. They created a vital space for these conversations, and my partners at Naritive, Network X OOH, and Lucky Hustle were honoured to help in the buildup to the event.
I was given a 3-minute sponsor slot. Instead of a pitch, I wanted to use the time to share the core idea why we do what we do. I spoke after the brilliant Leanne Emery-Hunter, and this is what I said:
That very idea Leanne Emery-Hunter just shared… that is the kind of powerful signal I’m talking about.
Being here, in this incredible sculpture park, you can feel the energy of these ideas. But it brings up a question that obsesses me:
What is the single biggest threat to a world-changing idea?
It’s not criticism. It’s not a lack of funding. It’s silence.
Every speaker on this stage is creating a signal for a greener, fairer world. We've heard how Steve grows resilience with crooked carrots, and how Gamuchirai Mutezo (PhD) is turning her organic passion into opportunities. These are solutions not just talks.
But those signals are being broadcast into a storm of noise... distraction, disinformation and digital overload.
"A brilliant idea without a clear path to the right audience is just a beautiful secret." - Rafiq Phillips
And right now we can’t afford any more secrets.
The innovator in a lab needs to reach investors like Leanne. The community leader on the ground must reach Crispian Olver and Viaksha Mohabir at the G20.
Connecting them isn't by chance. It’s a design problem.
At Naritive, my team and I are obsessed with that problem. As a TED Fellow, I've seen firsthand that an idea’s journey doesn’t end when it’s shared on a stage. This is where it begins.
Our contribution to this movement is the technology that strengthens the signal in the noise. We ensure the solutions born here don't just echo within these trees but resonate in the minds of the people who can scale them, fund them, act on them.
So, as you listen today, I invite you to do more than just be inspired. Think of yourself as a carrier for these signals. When an idea strikes you, ask yourself:
'Who do I know that needs to hear this?' And then share it.
Because a thriving future doesn't depend on creating brilliant ideas. It depends on all of us ensuring they get heard.
Thank you 👐
