When I worked in media sales (2007 - 2017) I had a motto that used to guide me when “choosing my battles” and pushing back on things I believed in, because I had bills to pay.
“Do you want to be rich? Or do you want to be right?”
This saved me a lot of energy in the corporate world of agencies and brands, but lately I’m realizing that when you champion the creator and you are representing artistic value, you will probably never be rich, so you might as well be right….
I’ve been watching the creator economy transition from social media platforms where opinion leaders could post their content and gain an audience, build a personal brand and make a career out of their passion, to where it is right now: Algorithm controlled, with all earning potential outside of the platform, throttled and rerouted back through the platform via boosting and paid media.
It was fun while it lasted, but it’s over now. If you are a creator and you aren’t figuring out how to extract audiences into your own ecosystems, and using TikTok and Instagram more for their algorithm strengths of discoverability and personal brand positioning, then you should start making the shift in your strategy now.
Big business will always look after it’s stakeholders and push creative value as low as it can for its own profit, this will never change.
The only way a creator can survive is if they educate themselves as to what their content is actually worth, rather than letting agencies and brands tell you what your value is, and to treat your personal brand like a business.
