THE HOT SEAT
Inside and Behind the Madlanga Commission
By: Andy Mashaile, Security Strategist | Strategy & Counter - Strategy Analyst.
"For the longest of time we saw, as we should, the South African Police Service as the defender of our Constitution — our protector.
"Little did we know...
"I remember growing up and believing that the police were our people. That they stood between us and harm and that's one of the reasons I joined the security industry, to be the protector and defender of my people. The uniform truly meant something...
"Many of us held onto that belief long after we probably should have.
"Because came the 6th of July 2025... Everything changed.
"The Kwazulu Natal Provincial Commissioner LT General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi stood before the nation, well postured, well prepared and very confident and said what so many had been too afraid — or too compromised — to say.
"He pulled back the curtain on a SAPS that had, somewhere along the way, lost its soul. What he revealed wasn't just shocking. It was the kind of thing that sits with you. That makes you angry. That confuses you. That leaves you with more questions than answers. That makes you ask — how long? How long did we not know, and how long did others know and say nothing?
"His revelations were so serious, so damning, that the President of the Republic had to instruct a commission be formed. The Madlanga Commission. And that is where this story truly begins and gets South Africans on a journey that feels so unreal."
