Dedicated sequencing projects in South Africa are attempting to unravel the mystery of how ‘elite controllers’ suppress HIV infection. By enriching global genetics knowledge, scientists at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and South African Medical Research Council, and their participants are not only driving the search for a cure for HIV but also illuminating the genomes of under-studied African populations in general.

Joe Slovo, situated in the vicinity of Port Elizabeth, is an informal settlement that provides shelter to more than 350 families. Here in the heart of this vibrant community, the Narrative 4 community center initially emerged as a simple initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness and recycling. The center has now evolved to play a multitude of roles, serving as a day care facility, a classroom for after-school lessons, a community kitchen, a library, a computer lab, a sports facility, an adult skill development center, and much more!

The N4 Narrative program has created a safe space for engagement and transformation, building something meaningful out of nothing, contributing to both the community and environment at the same time.

Elite controllers are a rare group of HIV‐1‐positive individuals who suppress viral loads (VL) to undetectable levels with elevated CD4 T‐cell counts in the absence of ART. Here we're interviewing researcher and senior lecturer Dr Veron Ramsuran PhD ramsuran on the implications of studying this rare genetic group. Amazing technology and expertise from and Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, SAMRC, and University of Kwazulu Natal.
