The world is waiting for safe, effective and life-saving vaccines for COVID-19. And as UNICEF prepares to supply some 2 billion doses to essential workers and vulnerable groups over the next year, we must also be clear about the reality ahead: vaccines alone will not end this pandemic.
It will take time to produce and distribute enough doses for widespread protection throughout the world. We will still need testing, tracing and treatments. We will each need to continue the safe habits that have so quickly become a fact of life: physical distancing, handwashing and wearing a mask. Vaccines have incredible potential. But to control this pandemic, we must use all of these life-saving tools together.
