~The Hout Bay Harbour Wrecks~

The wrecks in Hout Bay Harbour have always fascinated me. Once belonging to old fishermen and sailors, their stories have become lost to time. The reasons for their abandonment and eventual sinking are unknown, perhaps a result of changing times, neglect, or the elements?

These maritime remnants, now submerged, have found a new purpose in the circle of life as nature reclaims them. They've become a vital refuge for cormorants and seagulls, providing a safe sanctuary for nesting and a place to call home.

As the great Jacques-Yves Cousteau once said, "All life is part of a complex relationship in which each is dependent upon the others, taking from, giving to, and living with all the rest."

Whenever I see a sea cave, whether it be on a scuba dive or a free dive, I feel compelled to explore it. In the darkness, the outside world fades away and the mysteries of the deep unfold before my eyes. Each one is a journey into a hidden realm, where sunlight dances on the water's surface, casting surreal patterns on the ancient walls. Exploring these natural wonders reminds me of the beauty and magic our planet holds 🌊✨🏊‍♂️

The Eagle ray, a magnificent ambassador of the ocean moves with mesmerizing elegance. With a wingspan reaching up to 10 feet, these aquatic acrobats gracefully soar through the depths, casting shadows beneath the waves. They possess a unique filter-feeding technique, purifying their watery realm. These marine architects maintain the balance of their ecosystem, while their striking patterns captivate the hearts of those who encounter them, reminding us of the incredible diversity found in the world's oceans.

~Moochers~

Goat Island's cheeky treasures, the Snapper. Not only are they incredibly beautiful, they make the dive interesting because they follow you around and give you these condescending stares. We saw ones as big as 70cm long. They are also called moochers. It’s common to find big moochers sitting in the shallows sunning themselves in the early morning – divers have actually reported them sleeping in the sun. I can’t wait to dive with these cheeky characters again soon.

// STATUES //
The SS Thistlegorm set sail on her fourth and final voyage from Glasgow destined for Alexandria, Egypt. The vessel’s cargo included: Bedford trucks, Universal Carrier armoured vehicles, Norton 16H and BSA motorcycles, Bren guns, cases of ammunition, 0.303 rifles as well as radio equipment, Wellington boots, aircraft parts, railway wagons and two LMS Stanier Class 8F steam locomotives. The cargo was for the Allied forces in Egypt. At 01:30 on 6 October 1941 she was hit by two bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe. Today she is said to bring more revenue in tourism to Egypt than the pyramids. Here a Fordson WOT3 Truck takes you back in time, with a lonely Wellington boot on the hood. Taken on assignment in the Red Sea for Red Sea Jol.
