When it comes to sport at the highest level, is talent everything? Barry Austin doesn’t think so.

An engineer by training and respected cycling coach, Barry Austin has applied his talents to analysing data and patterns in developing a data-driven performance coaching approach that’s a deeply individual, athlete-centred philosophy that treats the rider, terrain, and environment as one system.

As a former national Olympic and World Tour cycling manager, Barry holds a UCI Level 3 Coaching Certification, and UCI Certified Sporting Director with a passion for sport, Barry has been credited with bringing out the best in riders such as multiple world champion, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot and other talent across the international professional sports spectrum.

According to Barry, talent is just one-third of the equation.

In this fascinating discussion, Barry and Gerald delve deeper into the importance of encouraging structure, personal growth, and performance - and the role each element plays in building lasting champions.

A bad ride does not mean all progress has stopped.

Andrew Stodel explains why he prefers a long-term goal that he can chip away at every day, even when things go wrong before a race.

Neil Tuck adds another perspective: look after the process and the small sub-goals along the way.

“You either respond or you react.”

Neil Tuck reflects on the slow process of adjusting after a career-ending injury - and why trying to push difficult thoughts away can sometimes be counterproductive.

Even world-class athletes have negative thoughts. As Neil explains, the difference lies in how they manage them and how quickly.

“I’ve been ridden over seven times. I’m full of pins.”

Andrew Stodel has faced repeated collisions, broken bones and the physical risks that come with handcycling. Yet he tells the story with humour and perspective.

When people recognise him as “the guy who rides that flat bike”, his response is simple:

“At least you saw me.”

Big goals provide direction. Short-term goals create momentum.

Neil Tuck explains why motivation is only one part of the picture. A sense of personal mastery and control over what lies within our sphere can be just as important.

Andrew Stodel brings that idea to life through his own approach: one audacious goal, one nearer-term target and an internal drive that does not depend on outside recognition.

Are marketers trying too hard to game the algorithm?

Doug Bird’s point: marketers can become so absorbed in strategy, impressions, hooks and finding creative ways to game the algorithm that they lose sight of the person they are trying to reach.
