The Great Escape was the perfect opportunity for us to use non-traditional channels of communication - one such example being moving billboards. To get this right, we partnered with Junior Smith Trucking. They travel all over South Africa and by branding their vehicles, we were able to spread the message far and wide.

One of the most successful elements of this campaign was how so many people rallied together to support local tourism.

In the end, we branded close to 250 vehicles - helicopters, trucks, cars and bikes - with The Great Escape logo and messaging. And each of these vehicles belonged to people eager to give Mossel Bay and the tourism sector a boost during tough times 🤩

Looking back at dark days gone by... In 2020, we were all hit by government-sanctioned lockdowns, causing the collapse of multiple industries worldwide, but especially the tourism sector. During this time, we were approached by Mossel Bay Tourism to try to bring people to the area. It was risky. People weren't keen to leave their houses and regulations were always changing, which made planning for a getaway incredibly difficult.

Matrix doesn't do anything half-cocked! We thought up the Great Escape, a little rebellion during trying times... And whoa, did it grow!

The Great Escape (to Mossel Bay) was inspired by one of the largest and most daring escape attempts to have ever taken place. In 1944, more than 200 allied soldiers made a pact to escape from a German prisoner-of-war camp. They dug three massive tunnels, named Tom, Dick and Harry, hoping one of them would lead to their freedom - and indeed, one of them (Harry) did. Over a third escaped! As life would have it, this bold plan was planned and orchestrated by none other than SA-born fighter pilot, Squadron Leader Roger Bushell.

Now, as you'll remember, 2020 had us feeling a bit like Roger Bushell. We sure weren't locked up but we were certainly locked down. So we planned an escape for us all and judging by the trajectory this campaign took, we'd say it was a great success...

Hello, 2022 CTICC Integrated Annual Report! What a beaut, am I right?

So there’s a few things going on here. First of all - the headline - “The art of resilience” represented by the protea surrounded by flames. As they say, sometimes the only way out of a fire is through it. From our perspective, the CTICC spent its time in dormancy (hello, hard lock down!) rethinking its game play and discovering new ways to bring in business. When they could finally open their doors, the CTICC implemented these plans, slowly growing its resilience to the new challenges brought on by Covid-19 and a difficult economic climate.

So onto our second element - the protea coming out of the fire… Like fynbos, and particularly the protea, the CTICC has turned a difficult situation into one that has helped them flourish. Proteas are interesting because in order to germinate and thrive, they need fire and heat to release their seeds. For us, this was the perfect symbol to represent the CTICC.

We paired this visual with watercolour elements to tie back to “art” in “The art of resilience” but to also illustrate the CTICC’s tenacity. Painting with watercolours forces the artist to work quickly, boldly and without fear.

And finally, the shape of the book - landscape, to further play on the concept of nature and the rough terrain that we all need to now navigate.

There’s so much more to this design and concept, both of which are explored in the book, so go take a look -https://www.cticc.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/IAR2022.pdf

It’s been awhile since we last posted but only because we’ve been super busy!

Over the last few years, we’ve held the CTICC contract to produce their annual report.

We started in 2019 with our “Shaping Tomorrow Today” design - a fingerprint with the impression of Africa at its centre to reflect the CTICC’s capacity to leave its mark and shape what it touches in order to create a prosperous future for all. This was followed by our “lockdown” edition “Adapt. Thrive. Inspire” which described the centre’s ability to transform and react to changing - and challenging - environments. The 2021 annual report, “Promoting Forward Thinking” highlighted the importance of strategy. To pivot or meet challenges head on, one must be agile and always think ahead - and the CTICC has successfully honed this skill over the years, but especially during Covid.

Of course, these themes were explored in much more detail in both the design and the writing, so go check them out at www.cticc.co.za/mediacentre/
