Chairman’s Chat Easter 2026
Welcome to another of my updates! I hope you enjoy reading the latest selection of snippets regarding the club.
My first piece of news is our introduction of monthly cocktails. Sue and I spend a lot of time researching these. I think that it’s Sue’s favourite part of my role, lol! Our latest concoction is ‘The Easter Bunny’, a very South African chocolate cocktail, with Van Der Hum and Chocolate cream liqueur. Maybe one for after a meal? Anyway, the point of these cocktails is simple. I donate ingredients for them to the club, and all proceeds go towards specific projects. Our current selection has been to raise funds to give the Annex some much needed love, with repairs to the walls and a nice new coat of paint. I would really like to have the Annex used more, particularly for events such as weddings etc, and having it look the part is the first step.
We are having a braai day next Sunday (Easter Sunday) for those who enjoy a cookout, the fires will be lit around midday. Bring those boeries and tjoppies and cook up a storm! There will be live music and the kitchen will also be open for those who want an easier life!
You will have noticed since my last chat that Alex no longer works with us in the mornings as her main job increased it’s workload. We were most disappointed as she was a real asset to us, but we still see her, and she continues to do our marketing/website, for which we are very grateful. So we are delighted to introduce Warren to you, who some of you may already know, and he will be filling in during times of sickness and holidays. Welcome, Warren!
We continue to increase our social membership with eight more members since Christmas. Don’t forget, membership gives you cheaper drinks at the bar, members’ Happy Hour every Friday, the weekly draw, and nobody chasing you to pay for parking when you walk the dog, lol! I really believe that the club is such an important part of the community, at a time when people seem to be becoming more and more insular. Talking to our tourist visitors recently has really brought this home to me, when they tell me that they don’t have anything like this where they come from.
Talking of community, our relationship with Simon’s Bay Estate is about to see some changes, as members will be voting at their AGM in May/June to decide whether of not to keep their current status with the club. It is a rather archaic and confusing setup currently, and we hope that, should they choose to step away as an organisation, the residents will continue to support us by joining in their own right to continue benefiting from the current discounted prices, as well as being eligible to join in the weekly draw.
The bowling green continues to be used by Lisa on Saturday mornings, for her dog agility, and training, and we have also had another dog trainer from further afield, who uses it for security dog training for surveillance and tracking etc. Our fitness classes also continue to thrive during the week, with yoga, aerobics, and Pilates. They are all very jolly, so why not give something new a try?
We are also making a concerted effort on the golf course to improve its condition, especially before the club championships at the end of April. Mike Dukas and his brother have also spent many hours at thd club recently, working on a semi-automation of the reticulation system. We look forward to it's completion which we believe will improve the condition of the course over the long term.
Finally, the suggestion box is still not being used very much. I ALWAYS respond to comments, so please do not hesitate to use it if you have something to say.
That’s all for now!
Colin
