GOATS GAINING GROUND IN SOUTHERN AFRICA: A CLIMATE-RESILIENT SHIFT
As climate change intensifies, communities across Southern Africa are adapting their agricultural practices to ensure sustainability and resilience. One notable shift is the increasing preference for goats over cattle in regions like Limpopo, South Africa.
Goats are more drought-resistant than cattle, requiring less water and feed. They can thrive in arid conditions and have a diverse diet, making them well-suited for areas affected by climate variability. This adaptability positions goats as a viable alternative for farmers facing the challenges of a changing climate.
While goats offer certain advantages, they are not a panacea for climate change impacts. Effective goat farming still requires investment in infrastructure, healthcare, and proper nutrition to ensure the well-being of the animals and the sustainability of the practice.
At the Khoi-San-E Foundation, we recognize the importance of integrating indigenous knowledge with modern practices to build resilient agricultural systems. Embracing goats as part of a diversified farming strategy can contribute to food security and economic stability in vulnerable communities.
