Some memories are funny.

Others take longer to write.

When violence entered our home, there were people who quietly stepped in.

Aunty Sally.

Rose.

Daphne.

Women who patched my mother up physically and, without knowing it, helped hold a frightened family together emotionally as well.

As a child, I thought they were among the smartest and kindest people in the world.

Looking back, I don't think I was wrong.

Growing-up Coloured, Confused & Divorced contains the laughter.

But it doesn't avoid the scars.

It is the story of a family, a childhood and the extraordinary ordinary people who helped us survive both.

📕 Paperback R249.

A book doesn't simply appear.

Before the cover, the launch post and the finished pages, there was somebody staring at a blank screen wondering whether the story was worth telling.

There were drafts.

Rewrites.

Doubts.

And eventually the decision to put a name on the cover.

Lekker Books exists for those South African voices.

South Africa once had laws capable of deciding where you could live, who you were allowed to love and even what racial box you were expected to fit into.

Now imagine a couple who were both classified Coloured.

One lighter than many people classified White.

The other darker than many people classified Black.

That was my family.

Eventually I decided that the easiest way to explain us was a Top-Deck chocolate.

Growing-up Coloured, Confused & Divorced is not a history textbook.

It is the story of what that history looked like when an ordinary Cape Town family had to live inside it.

South Africa has no shortage of stories.

Some make us laugh.
Some hurt.
Some take us somewhere completely different.
And some make us recognise pieces of ourselves.

At Lekker Books, we're building a home for those stories and the local authors brave enough to put their names on them.

Whether you're looking for romance, poetry, fiction, memoir or something you didn't expect to find, your next read might be closer than you think.

Girl meets boy.

Simple enough.

Except she came from a Cape Flats township and he came from one of Cape Town's Coloured "estates".

This was not Romeo and Juliet.

It was family, class, identity, Apartheid South Africa and two people discovering that love doesn't always care very much about the rules society has written for it.

It is just one thread in Growing-up Coloured, Confused & Divorced, a South African story filled with moments that are funny, uncomfortable, painful and very real.
