FCR CONSUMER ALERT | A LOWER INSTALMENT MAY COST MORE OVER TIME
A consolidation loan can combine several debts into one monthly payment. A top-up can provide extra cash while replacing or changing an existing loan. Both may ease immediate pressure—but check the full cost before signing.
Ask for a written comparison showing:
• The settlement amount for each existing debt
• Any additional cash you will receive
• The new interest rate, fees and credit-life insurance cost
• The new repayment term and monthly instalment
• The total amount you will repay over the full term
A smaller monthly instalment may result from a longer repayment period. Check whether the old accounts will actually be settled, and keep proof of every settlement.
TransUnion’s Q2 2026 data show that new non-bank personal loans increased by 21.3% year on year. This is a market-wide figure; it does not tell us how many were consolidation loans or top-ups.
Before agreeing, ask yourself: “Will this reduce my overall debt burden, or only give me temporary breathing room?”
