I get to design quite a few online stores for people which is amazing to do - especially when it takes a good product and gives it a much larger audience. Happy clients = happy me! 😃

I design in WooCommerce or Shopify depending on the customers requirements.

Here are three WooCommerce projects:

🌹 Spiral Diffusion (I got to put on my photographers hat for this one and really enjoyed it). This is a really good place to shop for home smellies! Based at the Shongweni Market and now Nationwide.

🐎 Unicorn Tack (Everyone knows I love a horse!)

I have been absent from "selling myself" for a long time as I find it so cringe! But lately I have discovered that many people don't even know what it is that I do for a living so here we go - the start of a new journey to inform everyone of the work that I love so much.

I was a professional photographer (yes I studied that for 4 years!) in the commercial, corporate and editorial industries and had an amazing career - until i didn't anymore, for a whole host of reasons, and fell into web design by mistake. I discovered that I loved it!

So for the last 10 years, instead of clicking away with my camera, I have been tapping away at my computer, designing websites and meeting amazing clients, helping to build and market businesses and it has honestly become a big passion.

My long experience with photography and a bit of graphic design has given me a good eye, and my time in corporate and professional industries, a solid understanding of business. This means I create websites that are designed to attract the right people and communicate the right message, not just look good.

But enough blabbing! The proof is in the pudding I say! Today I am starting with one of my favourite projects so far. A website created for a beautiful guesthouse in the town of Prince Albert in the Karoo, South Africa, which currently ranks 6th best B&B in Africa on Trip Advisor. The clients are wonderful to work with and together we created something really special.

*Hint: The key to any great showcase is exceptional images. People are visual! In this collab the co-owner, Inga Terblanche, happens to be an outstanding photographer (and a good friend) so that part was easy.

EMAIL Phishing! HOW TO TELL: I have noticed a big increase in email phishing - especially from what looks like the hosting service providers of my clients websites.
There is one easy way to tell if it is a scam:
Check the email address that it has been sent FROM. The name and subject line may look legit but if the actual email address is something that doesn't resemble the company then it's Phishing for sure.
Sometimes you might have to look closely for spelling errors in the email address as these guys get crafty.
"Undisclosed recipients" is also a red flag!

PLEASE NOTE: If you are unsure if the email being sent to you is a scam or not - delete it and contact the company in question and ask them if they do want whatever the email was asking.
Do not just give details - especially any details to do with finance through an email.
Or you can go and login into your account online (not through the email) and see if what is being requested is a notification on your account.

IS YOUR WEBSITE VULNERABLE TO BEING HACKED?

This post should probably be a blog because when it comes to hackers - I have A LOT to say! But before I rant off on how I have just found some as***le creeping his way through my own website let me give you some advice on your websites:

THREE EASY STEPS TO SECURING YOUR WEBSITE [One that does not have Woocommerce on it - That's a whole other post]

1. Ensure that you have a security plugin on your site [eg: Wordfence] and most importantly that it is optimised. Merely installing the thing won't help you unless you have it set correctly.

2. Have an EXCELLENT, STRONG password to access your Wordpress site AND your hosting platform. Your poodle's name or husband's birth date will not do. This: "EGPpxfeg*R5z$LLJbghy654 #@ #" is a good example of a STRONG PASSWORD. You should have a file saved somewhere safe so that you can access them and all your passwords should be similar to this.

3. Ensure that you regularly check the backend of your site and make sure your plugins and themes are updated. Un-updated plugins are a hackers portal right into the heart of your website.
Most web designers like myself will offer monthly maintenance for a certain fee but if you are watching your pennies it is pretty easy to do yourself, provided you don't forget!

[Watch this space for some future posts on easily doing all these things]

So I can whip up a website for any client with great confidence and ability but when it came to doing mine it was all second guessing and putting on hold and head in the sand etc until eventually I had to have a website up and I was forced to get my act together. I got it up and then got busy with my business - designing awesome sites for all my clients, keeping all these clients' websites maintained and free from spam, optimised to the hilt, updated to the max - and of course forgot about mine....

The other evening a mate had a mate who wanted to check out my site but when she tried to access it - it was down. Luckily for me, instead of just moving on to the next designer she called me up to tell me. If she hadn't done that who knows when I would have figured it out. [Lesson learned!] Anyway - I did indeed have some poisonous miserable lonely, nothing better to do with his life hacker infiltration that caused me to be locked out with no access to anything.

I have no money portal on my site, I have no database of clients or any information that anyone could possibly use to their advantage connected to my website. So why hack me?

I honestly don't have the answer. There is no reason other than to f@!k with my day and waste my time. So if you think that you have a site that's not worth putting security on or maintaining in a good fashion - please rethink your think.

Unluckily for this dude I have been through this experience before on a far worse level where a client had a dormant hacker lying in wait on a membership site that involved monthly payments for over 300 members. This site had been created by one of those online "services" who recommend certain plugins etc and then plant the necessary evils to troll you and take your cash further down the line when you have forgotten about them.
14 days of pure hell ensued and even the "hacking professionals" in South Africa couldn't get this guy. He was even sending us laughing face emojis on Facebook! It was traumatic.
Eventually by pure luck we found an awesome developer who helped us and that hacker was put to rest.

I learnt a few things over those two weeks. One: Stay Calm, Two: Surround yourself with good people who can help you in these kinds of situations and Three: Find the motherf@$ker and kick his damn ass off your site.
Luckily today, I didn't have to use any third party services as I managed to find and delete the file changing codes myself. I say luckily because you can imagine the hourly costs involved when it's a complex hacked situation.

So if you are still reading this and have a website of your own - please please please, ensure that you protect it as much as you can.

If you need any help - I am more than happy to show you how! Send me an email at [email protected]

I have just finished this site for a photography friend of mine, Ilze Kitshoff. We studied together all those years ago when photographs were still shot on film. Today she is a top stills photographer on movie sets and has photographed just about everyone in the industry and I absolutely love her work! I was so happy when she contacted me to design her new website.
The Brief: A simple one page website that is to the point and directs people to following an Instagram account showcasing her ever updating portfolio.
