Steven Zulu Shongwe (31), known as Smezi from Tembisa, has earned nominations for prestigious awards this year, marking a significant recognition of his talent and hard work. The Gazata National Music Awards, taking place at 44 Anderson Streets in Nelspruit on September 7, 2024, have nominated Smezi for Best Afro Pop Single with his hit "Kemaratong" from his latest album, "Smezi Kazi Palisa," released in May. The Mzansi Arts and Media Awards, held on September 21, 2024, at the Victory Theatre in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, have also nominated him for Best Afro Pop Artist.
Regarding the criteria for these awards, Smezi shared, “In Afro Pop single they are looking for a great category! It's a nod to the vibrant and infectious sound that blends African rhythms, melodies, and harmonies with modern pop production. Some possible sub-categories or criteria for evaluating the best Afro Pop single might include catchiness and memorability, cultural relevance and authenticity, vocal performance and delivery, instrumentation and production quality, lyrical depth and storytelling, and danceability and groove.”
Similarly, the Mzansi Arts and Media Awards celebrate the best Afro Pop artist based on vocal ability and range, stage presence, songwriting skills, industry impact, fan engagement, and musical versatility. Smezi emphasized, “Being recognized in this specific area can be a great motivator, inspiring artists to continue innovating and producing high-quality music that showcases the beauty and diversity of Afro Pop.”
Fans can look forward to Smezi's performances at both award ceremonies, promising an energetic and polished show. "My fans can typically expect an energetic and polished performance, possibly featuring some of their hit songs or new releases. The performance might also include special guests, surprises, or unique arrangements, making it a memorable experience for my audience," S
