There is a little bit of Frida Kahlo in all of us. Frida found a way. Of pain – of permitting us to see the pain and in doing so, reflected the pain of the world. She is a figure that represents the conquest of adversity and represents how – against all odds – a person is able to make their life interesting and reinvent themselves so that their life is personally fulfilling. Frida Kahlo in that sense is a symbol of hope, power, and empowerment.
Artitude Graaff-Reinet and Hartland Media are proud to announce the Frida Karoo Art Initiative. This initiative does not aim only to celebrate the work of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, but also to celebrate the Karoo, and to submerge its interesting people, animals, fauna and flora and all other elements of this vast landscape into the art of Frida Kahlo.
The aim is to inspire established and up and coming artists to recreate Kahlo artworks and incorporate Karoo elements.
What better time than COVID-19 lockdown to start with this project. The global epidemic has forced us to slow down, to think and do more and to reinvent ourselves.
// WE ARE LAUNCHING THIS EXCITING INITIATIVE WITH AN ART COMPETITION \\
It’s very simple - any artist, of any age using any medium, can participate - creating an artwork/s inspired by the Mexican painter in combination with attention the indigenous culture and elements of the Karoo. Whether it be paintings, sculptures, photography, video, sketches, linocuts or any other, all forms of art are welcome.
Works must be submitted BEFORE the 31st of May 2020 via the internet, the Post-Office, courier or direct drop-off at the Artitude Gallery at Our Yard Country Stop in Graaff-Reinet.
