The recommendation surprises nearly every parent I tell, but it's well founded: your child should see a dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of that first little tooth poking through.
I know that feels early. There are only a few teeth, after all. But these first visits aren't really about treatment โ they're about establishing comfort, catching any early concerns, and giving you guidance on the things that genuinely matter at this stage: brushing those new teeth, avoiding the bottle-at-bedtime habit that causes early decay, and understanding what's normal as teething progresses.
Just as importantly, early visits help your child grow up viewing the dentist as a familiar, friendly place rather than somewhere associated with pain or fear. That early relationship pays dividends for a lifetime.
Think of it less as a check-up and more as laying a foundation.
