The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has issued a strong warning against planned mass action targeting illegal immigration, saying any disruption to transport services could hurt the economy and affect millions of ordinary South Africans.
In a statement released on Tuesday, SANTACO said it supports lawful immigration and believes everyone entering South Africa should comply with the country's immigration laws. However, the organisation stressed that concerns about illegal immigration must be addressed through legal and peaceful means.
The taxi body expressed concern over calls for demonstrations that could interfere with transport operations, restrict movement, or disrupt economic activity.
"SANTACO's business is the movement of people," the organisation said, noting that millions of commuters rely on taxis daily to get to work, school, healthcare facilities, and businesses.
The council warned that any unlawful action causing instability could negatively affect transport operators, small businesses, tourism, trade, and investor confidence.
SANTACO also highlighted the important role played by the taxi industry in cross-border travel and trade within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), transporting traders, workers, tourists, and families across the region.
While acknowledging South Africans' constitutional right to protest and advocate for policy changes, the organisation urged all groups to ensure their demonstrations remain peaceful, lawful, and respectful of the rights and dignity of others.
The council further called on government to strengthen border management, improve immigration systems, and consistently enforce existing immigration laws.
SANTACO said South Africa's future prosperity depends on economic stability, social cohesion, regional cooperation, and the uninterrupted movement of people and goods.
