Happy World Autism Awareness Day!
To my fellow autistics, today is for us. I often wish this awareness could happen every month, because so many people still don’t know what autism truly is or how to treat autistic people with dignity. Resources are scarce, and understanding is even scarcer.
I was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. Since then, I’ve faced challenges that are hard to explain, sensory struggles with sound, smell, and touch, and tics, involuntary moments when I couldn’t control my body. Autism brought many difficulties and co-occurring conditions, but through it all, I praise the Lord for giving me strength to see the positive side. Even on the hardest days, God shows me the light.
So today, let’s celebrate the positives of autism. Let’s honor the small wins, the laughter, and the people who stand by us without judgment. Let’s thank the organizations working tirelessly, Action in Autism Autism South Africa and those who train our loyal assistance dogs who understand us when no one else can, Smart Service Dog and South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind we see you ❤️
And to the mothers, fathers, aunts, caregivers—often exhausted, often underappreciated—you are angels. Your love and perseverance keep us going.
Autism is not just about challenges; it’s about resilience, joy, and community. On this day, and every day, we celebrate the gift of life, the strength to keep moving forward, and the beauty of being uniquely ourselves.
