Four suspects, including a police sergeant, arrested after shooting at police in Nkandla Hostels

Gauteng - Four suspects — one of them a serving police sergeant — have been arrested after allegedly opening fire on police and security personnel at a tavern in Nkandla Hostels, Extension 36, on Saturday night.
What happened
The incident unfolded at around 22:30 on 05 September 2026 after a community member tipped off police and security about a group of men allegedly carrying unlicensed fi****ms at the tavern. As officers and security members approached, the occupants allegedly opened fire, forcing them to take cover, surround the premises and issue loud commands to surrender. When the suspects reportedly refused, police used “necessary minimum force” to bring the situation under control and arrested four people.
What police found
During a search of the tavern, officers recovered four spent cartridges and a firearm hidden behind a deep freezer; the gun’s serial numbers had been filed off. A black zip-up bag containing suspected he**in was also seized. Investigators believe the recovered firearm may be a police weapon taken during a robbery in Olievenhoutbosch earlier this year, pending forensic verification.
Who was arrested
One of those detained has been identified as a serving police sergeant stationed at SAPS Randburg. The other three suspects have not been named in the statement.
Charges and next steps
The four are expected to appear in court soon on charges, including attempted murder, discharging a firearm, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of unlicensed ammunition, and possession of drugs.

Gauteng Acting Provincial Commissioner Major Fred Kekana commended the community member who provided the tip-off, as well as the police and security personnel who responded decisively to the threat.
