We’re not saying we can see the future, we’re just saying… we are always ready for it. This means we keep an eye on trends and sometimes even create them. It also means that when Zooming into meetings became the cool new thing to do (read: nobody had a choice if they wanted their business to survive COVID-19 😬), we had already been there for a few years – working remotely and growing while doing it - and had also successfully figured out how to unmute ourselves with regularity 😅. As we type this, we realise, quite brutally, that some of you reading this may not have been alive yet in 1994 – that is for us a truly horrifying thought 😬. Does it mean we’re old, or does it mean we’re wise? Don’t answer that.

Back in 1994 though, a nation chose wisely, and the result has been one of the most beautiful rebrandings you could ever hope to witness 🇿🇦. As a country we transformed and became, grew and challenged, celebrated and danced and continue to do so. Happy Freedom Day, SA. We all deserve it. ❤️

Ahh, the eponymous annual report. A time-honoured business output. Here to fulfill mandates and address growth through the use of confusing graphs and lots of text at a very small point size. Who reads it, apart from the design team while they are lovingly assembling it and proofing it and editing it? We’ll pull the band-aid off gently because we know the amount of work that goes into compiling it – very, very few people/maybe even nobody. 👀

But doesn’t it look impressive in the office reception or on the boardroom table, or dropped onto the desk in front of a prospective client? You tapped it twice when you put it down for them – proud, and you should be.

At Brandswell we are an equal opportunity agency. We do the cool, creative, inspiring stuff with just as much passion as the adjusting of graphs on 200-page documents – and let’s not even talk about typesetting… the point is, ask us to do your annual report and we promise it will look great, it will work hard and it will be done with love. Plus, as stated, we at least will read it. You’re doing great by the way. That’s what we got out of page 127 paragraph 3.

When it comes to advertising, it isn’t about what you sell, so much as how you sell it. This is why, in South Africa in particular, you will find that your favourite brand's advertising champions diversity, speaks the language of the audience, moves forward ethically and supports inclusivity. In short, advertising fundamentally supports, celebrates and endorses our Human Rights. Little wonder that we love what we do.

All of us here at team Brandswell would like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours the happiest holiday season, however you choose to spend it. May it be filled with merriment, the best people and all the good things. Until next year. 🥹🎄🤗

The year was 2006. Pluto was still a planet (we see you, boo) and the artist formally known as Twitter was born. Daniel Powter had a Bad Day but the world disagreed, and made the track number 1 for the year instead. Shakira – arguably the queen of pop at the time - also came out with a banger, Hips Don’t Lie. And we confirmed that the hip-hops don’t either. We’ll explain. Back in 2006, Sprite, a perennial favourite fizzy drink was suffering a steady sales decline. Maybe that had something to do with the re-entry of Pepsi into our local markets or the launch of Coke Zero the year before, fragmenting market share, or maybe people just forgot how cool the brand was for a minute. It was our job to remind them.

Our mandate was quite clear, turn things around in the Western Cape coloured community. And we did this by pitting Ready D against TBO Touch in a Hip-Hop showdown for the ages. This activation used these famous faces within our local Hip Hop culture, radio stations (Good Hope FM and Metro FM) and a mix of advertising channels including in-store, outdoor, mobile, social and events to create the biggest national hip hop tournament ever hosted in South Africa. The result: Freedom from Thirst and an increase in coolness (and sales).
