What We Choose to Carry
Our cultures carry the memory of those who came before us in the languages we speak, the names we carry, the food we prepare, the songs we sing, the stories our elders tell, and the ways we gather around a table.
In a world that moves quickly towards sameness, preserving culture is an act of remembrance. It is how we make sure that the generations after us inherit more than photographs and history books. They inherit something they can feel, speak, taste, hear and recognise as their own.
We don’t preserve culture by placing it behind glass.
We preserve it by living it.
Cooking the recipes.
Speaking the languages.
Asking our elders questions.
Teaching our children where their names come from.
Passing down the stories.
Making space for traditions to evolve without losing their roots.
Because identity is not only found in the past.
It is something we carry forward.
This Heritage Day, may we remember that what we preserve today becomes the heritage of tomorrow. 🇿🇦
Happy Heritage Day 🎉✨
