Working on these two versions taught me a lot about balancing my creative vision with the client’s preferences. I loved the energy in the red design and felt it captured the lounge’s nightlife spirit, but I also understood why the client wanted something simpler and cleaner. It’s always a give-and-take – as a designer I try to bring my creativity, yet I also want the final design to reflect what the client envisions for their brand. In this case, I learned that sometimes a clean, easy-to-read layout (like the white design) can be very effective, especially when it matches the client’s style and brand identity.
In my initial flyer design, I used a deep red background with vivid drink images to capture the lively nightlife vibe of the lounge. I chose warm, intense colors and placed shots of Jägermeister, Gordon’s gin, Chivas Regal, and other cocktails around the text to make the flyer feel energetic. The bold “Tots Special” lettering in yellow stands out sharply against the red, and the whole layout is meant to grab attention and convey excitement. My goal was to evoke the warmth and buzz of an evening at the bar with this concept.
The second version is much simpler, on a clean white background, reflecting the client’s request for a more minimal look. This design is airy and straightforward: the background is plain white, the lounge’s logo and name are in gold-black at the top, and I used black text for the “Tots Special” offer. Fewer drink images appear, symmetrically placed, so there’s plenty of white space. The overall feel is calm and uncluttered, focusing on clarity so the message is easy to read.
At the end of the day, I believe the red version communicates the lounge’s energetic, nighttime atmosphere more effectively. The rich red tones and dynamic imagery immediately convey excitement and warmth, much like the feeling of being in a lively bar. The white version is elegant and clear, but it feels a bit more reserved. For a high-energy lounge and bar environment, that burst of color and vibrancy in the red design really pulls you into the scene.
Which one do you feel draws you in more — and why?
